I am not sure if Indy stocks that number. They have some proprietary Wiseco stuff I believe.

KB makes a forged piston that is within .015 of the compression height you would need. I am quite certain you could face mill .015 off the top of those pistons.

Diamond will make 2 changes to a shelf stock piston for a minimal charge. ( semi-custom/stock). If you have some nice Crower rods, then your should put a good piston in it and get EXACTLY what you need with the Diamonds, unless the Indy deal works out.

I prefer a 470 Low deck to a 493RB for the same money. The 470 is a great bucks down combination in both blocks that's real easy on parts and runs forever when carefully assembled...3.90 stroke is the same as a 455 Buick BTW

great engine mike

I`ve got the "old school" kit. Stock off set ground(3.900 stroke)413 steel crank, Eagle 6.385 rods,je 12.11 comp pistons and w/rpm heads it runs pretty good and have almost 9 years in the same 400 block w/same rods and crank. Bulet proof street/strip combo that keeps on ticking.

I agree with Muscle Mike and Todd. Great combination. We have done the machine work on dozens of them over the years with very good results. Good choice.

Before all the new aftermarket parts the 452/470 low deck combination was unbeatable for durability and consistency.

Competition Wedge,

I realize that custom pistons are the way to go. I am going to be using some custom Diamonds in a 499 build I have also. I was looking at all these parts I have and the only thing holding me from building a 470 is pistons. I have everything to build a mild 470 utilizing ported Stage V heads and a RPM intake. I just don’t want to spend a lot. I would rather save the coin and use it towards the bigger motor.

...using 6.385 rods...

What about all the hullabaloo of rod to stroke ratio? While there are clearly 470s using the 6.385 rods, the shift appears to be toward the longer rod and shorter piston. Any reason for this? Not looking to hijack, just want to hear thoughts since we're discussing the 470s. Thanks.

Well, ive done the research, got great input from you guys, spoke with mike from muscle motorss and sam from indy. Iam ordering the kit tomorow. The indy kit is on sale and pound for pound mike said is the best kit for stock style heads and he told me its just a great, reliable combo that makes great power and torque. He told to have the crank shotpeened and watch the taper on the jornals but minimal block cearance and it just works great! Thank you all for your help. This is gonna be fun! Anyone got a used rotating assembly for sale?!!! hey,iam cheep! I had to try! Thanksagain! I will keep you all posted. Its a 383,I swear!!!!

BB ? Do you mean B vs an RB ? What headers do you presently have ? Most headers are a compromise so they will fit many chassis and both deck heights , some work better with one combo vs the other . the only company I know of that makes a deck height specific header is TTi , so if you don't have TTi's you should be all set.

If you have an exhaust system on the car with a crossover pipe you will have to modify the headpipes as the headers will be closer together once installed .
