I got a set of Minilite copy rims made by Optima at a swap meet a couple years ago. They are 15x9 with 4 1/8” backspace, -0.9” offset. I wanted to run them with my 245/50/15 tires that were previously on my 15x8 rallyes with 4.5 backspacing, and 0.0” offset. Obviously this was going to put the tire out closer to the fenders and I was close right now.

So I lipped the front fenders. I did this because in the future I will be running 275/40/17 on 17x9 rims as funds allow. I knew from others experience I had to move the front lower edge of the fender back. I installed a spare 245/50/15 on the new rims to mock them up.

Troy, helped me along with this. It was his idea to have the rod supporting the inside to fold against and get a contour. It ended up being pretty much a straight line because I didn’t put a couple relief cuts in it. Oh well.

I think I could have got away with about ľ” less this much cut back.

In the rear:

The tires were pushed out about 1”. I think if I bottom out the rear I might rub. But my other concern was if I’m at the track and the car leans over will I rub.

I found a loading ramp embankment that allowed me to compress the heck out of one side and get the rear end at a major angle. I got 3" compressed compared to ride height. And I still could fit my knuckles between the tire and the fender lip and outer double wall portion of the wheelhouse.

Ended up giving the car a cool new look.

Rims look great!, I'm not auto cross racer, but man it sure looks like you have REAR clearance issues. ( on the front tires). but they look good.

Thanks !!

Yes, that is close. But it's at full cranked lock. I bet it would rub fully cranked up into a driveway. But that's not a common thing you do. The part that is rubbing is the splash fender spash pan. I could modify that I think.

The fronts also rub slightly on top. I did my best to get the car to roll as much as I could late last night. I hammered the thing sideways many times up fwy on-ramps, industrial streets, parking lots.

I cleaned up the rims with this really cool brillo-like/type flapper wheel (p/n info in pic). The flaps have grit on one the sides of them. I was surprised at the results it has. Should be neat to use for other projects.

What really worked well and fast was putting the rim on a swivel shop chair and adjusted the height of the rims with blocks to meet that sanding wheel. I even added a block to the back of the grinding motor to get the angled surfaces.

The rims originally had polished center. But I wanted a cast look so I bought some Rustoleum textured Dark Pewter spray paint

Note block to tilt grinder and block under rim to get the rim up to the abrasive wheel.

I like it.

To get even more of a road race look I'd add longer open end lugnuts.

Are the stock wheelstuds up to that wide of a tire?

Cool looking wheel, didn't know they were available in that size or from that company; thanks for the info. Might look pretty good on my Roadrunner.......
Where did you get them?

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

The swap meet. Where else do you buy parts?

I found some of this Optima's for sale online in June, but the link is dead. Read below wrote I found in June.

There was someone here once that said they bought some aluminum filler putty that would polish. He had a picture and it looked pretty darn good. He used it on a 67/68 Cuda H/L bezel, IIRC. I mean, you could tell, but hey for a rim I'd try it.

This picture is still stored on the Colorworks Motorsports website. But I can't find any link to any Optima brand wheels??

Thanks very much. The picture was mostly luck combined with strange grocery store parking lot lighting and the camera setting with the picture of the guy in darkness with the star behind him.

I tried to get a picture in the daylight but I was too late.

The rim inset color really changes and gets darker when it doesn't have good direct light on it.

Are you to run center caps ?

I have these road race wheels for my car, and are not machined for a center cap (oring style at least) thinking I might run without them

I don't have any caps for them. I was thinking some aluminum pipe to simulate the old race bolt on caps. Circle track car use them.

Did they really run them with the wheel bearing exposed like that? I guess it would work on race-only car that is serviced frequently, but a setup like that on the street would use up bearings pretty fast.

This would look ok.

How much are real Minilite wheels in the US?

They are really cheap here in the UK. You get them in any size up to 15-inch and any backspace you want. They come with center caps too if you did want to use them.

Plus you can have a range of colours and a polished rim too if you want. Extra cost though.

Around $1500 for four, delivered to your door, with caps, any backspace. I had a set of 2 15x8 and 2 15x10 quoted about 4 months ago.

That is more expensive than in the UK. Mine (the same sizes) cost about $1000 delivered.

That makes a change! Everything is usually half the price in the US to what we pay here.

The US ones must be made in the UK and shipped over. It will be down to shipping costs and import duties.
