Iam getting ready to purchase a complete stroker kit and i cant make up my mind on what would be the best one for my application. It will be installed in an a body street/strip machine. 4.10 dana, auto trans, around 4800 stall converter. Iam looking for stump pulling torque and longevity is very important. Mancini sells a 500 cui. balanced assembly with quality parts for 1750. I plan on running a hydrolic cam and a dual plane intake. I dont wanna have to rev the heck out of it either. I have had a couple of 451s that ran great but i wanna build something different. I have both 440 and low deck 400 blocks so thats not an issue. Ive seen a couple 470 kits for the lowdeck but ive never heard of anyone running one so iam a little leary. So,you guys know your stuff! What would you build? Iam looking for high tens in a all steel a body. Thanks guys! I forgot to mention, iam not looking to buid anything exotic(external oil system, brodix heads) Just, tried and true reliable setups! Thanks for your help!

Cheapest is probably the 4.15 crank 493/500 in stuff since they are the most common.
I like the 4.25 stroke 2.20 pin 7.1 rod combo for best torq. from 440-Source

I've followed all the Source threads as well and listening to all the "bad" it seems that most of that could have been prevented had it been checked out prior to use.

Can't say first hand as I've never had the chance to use any of their stuff. I would however if I had the chance. I would not buy anything that was "pre" balanced a I would want to have everything (regardless of who it was from) checked out and made right (if any errors) prior to assembly.

There seems (to me at least) that there are alot more members here happy with there stuff and it working well then the other way around.

What ever kit you decide to get, have it cheked out

Good advise, check everyones work. And if you can, have someone check yours.

Their stuff is low priced for a reason. So mistakes are going to happen,BUT that does`nt mean it ain`t worth a little extra effort to check or correct a few dimensional issues. The parts themselves I believe are sound.
I would use one.
Shop around there are some deals from people who have changed their direction/need cash.

Thanks alot guys. I had my doubts about those pre-balanced assemblies. I do plan on doing the final assembly so if there is a problem,i should know about it when i assemble it. Also, i know there is no replacement for dispacement but as i stated, iam not building anything to exotic. Ive been seeing alot of low deck 470 kits for sale but the have a 3.90 stroke crank? what the hell kinda stroke is that? Is it a cusstom built piece? Also, has anyone used one or know anyone who has? Thats probably enough cubes to get me where i want but again,i wanna keep the rpms 6200 or below. I have a set of 915 hps worked with bigger valves, plunge cut, good valves. Eventually i would be switching to rpms. I just wanna get all the info i can before i lay down my money, you know what i mean? Thanks again guys!

Read the thread by BG Racing.Bob is doing a build with Source parts and giving an honest opinion. It is an early kit and some of the problems they had with them have been corrected.BG will give an honest opinion and he is very highly respected.I have there heads and a few people I know have their other stuff. No problems and my heads have been on over 2 years .Is there better stuff out there? You bet but even the best has to be checked.Rocky

Check, check, check and then have 5 other guys check it behind you! Got it! Iam liking that 493 setup. It seems to be the most common so it must be a tried and true combo. I checked out 440 source website. They seem to have it together. Like you guys said,as long as i have the crank checked before assembly i shouldnt run into any issues. As for a machinest, any recomondations in the northeast? Iam in jersey but iam willing to travel for good work! Thanks again, guys. You have been very helpful!

I've built 8 of them so far, I like the 4.25 crank with the 2.200 journals the best in an RB, nothing wrong with a 493 but the 505-512 gives you those extra useable cubes with no downside. More torque at any RPM all else being equal plus that little extra stroke means you can go a bit bigger on the intake duration for more top end breathing and stay streetable with street gears and moderate stalls....best of both worlds.

Any rod in the 6.76" to 7.100 c to c is fine.

As said with any modest priced crank kit, hold back a couple hundred in your budget to have everything thoroughly checked.

The last one I built I came across a really good deal on a 4.15 crank with a spun rod journal that I sent to Dan (Dram) to have offset ground to 4.300" and 2.200 journals ....crank was perfect when I got it back and I could spin it with my pinky finger torqued in place.

I wrote a whole book on the subject so I won't repeat all of it here but the basic concept is to start with a plan. You want to run 10's in an A body so figure out how much power you need and where you want the peak torque to be. Using an A body means you'll need to sort out the header options. You need to figure out which cylinder head you'll be using in order to decide on a B or an RB block.

Asking for a stroker kit recommendation before you've sorted out all of those other things is putting the cart before the horse.
