Hello,

Many of you helped me get my BB Dart going and I thank you. My students are quite enamored with it and are kinda in "awe" of something so different. It runs and drives but needs some tuning. I live in the snowbelt so I won't be driving it for awhile but it was obvious for the short distance that I drove it that it needs some help with tuning.

Here is the engine:
1976 440 re-ringed, 223-230 cam (Hughes) Holley Street Dominator, Some port work on heads, stock ignition with Schumacher Headers and the infamous 750 Eddy carb.

Car:

1974 Dart Sport, 3300 lbs, est., 4.10's, 2300 stall, 3" exhaust.

Intended usage:

Mainly DDing, with 3-4 trips to the track a year. I am looking for a carb that will allow me to do the following:

Be reasonably tuneable
Reasonable on fuel-I have to drive it 40 miles everytime I leave home
Reliable-I can change 4000' in elevation in a trip easily
Have good performance potential for later when I get a real engine put together.

I am leaning towards a Holley, but I'd look at others.

My budget is leaning towards used, or new but not $500 or anything........

Thank you, ROB

There are a few guys that are pretty good at Holley rebuilds, and sell on Ebag. I just got an 830DP from this guy that looks real good. All vibratory cleaned & polished. Assembled with quality parts & gaskets. And at an unbeatable price. Used parts are sometimes a gamble, but I like what I got for the money with this guy.

For a mild street 440, I'd look for a good 750 V.S. 3310 or 80508 list carb.

I've used the 750 3310 on a mild 440 build much like yours and it works great for what you're wanting to do.

Best street carb I ever ran on a 318 or 440

That helps.

I have heard that Holleys tend to need tuning alot, or is that a "old Wives tale".

I am mechanically inclined and I have been known to mess around a lot with mechanical stuff.

Also, what about the 800 Eddy?

I do like the price of the 750 Holley. Brand new for about $250.

There alot of new / nearly new 750's out there for around $125-175 so that helps.

Thank you. This is helping my worries some......

I really like the Thunder series 800 cfm eddy carbs and with that small cam, its all you need. We have used lots of them in our shop on 383/440 combos and OTOB, they are hard to beat for responsive street driving on a BB mopar. For the most part you can just bolt it on and burn rubber and if it needs minor tuning you can change rods in less that a minute.

Every one I've had run great right out of the box. We've run them on both 360's and mild 440's and the tune seems pretty good right out of the box.

I tend to always buy new just because you never know what ham fisted mods have been attempted before!

Usually a little tuning of the idle mixture screws (mine work well when you turn them all the way in and then a half turn out) in addition to putting in a lighter secondary spring for a little quicker secondary response.

The ONLY problem I've had was when a friend bought one of the chrome plated looking ones and after a week of driving it started to stumble and have problems. Come to find out that some of the plating had flaked off. Once that was fixed it ran perfectly again.

It sounds like either is fine.

The eddy would support some serious HP according to the other post on here close.

I don't see me ever building more than 450-500 HP at the outside due to my usage of the car.

One last question and I will lurk some more.

Is the Eddy 1407 750 really that bad???

I am thinking so just from my usage on my plow/towing truck. Just curious. It is on my car now.

Thanks, ROB

any carb is going to need tuning. A Holley is a much better carb. For what you have even the Awful Eddy 750 would work fine. If you are looking for the most performace than you'd want a holley.

The Eddy AFB is troublesome but the AVS is the best street carb there is for a mild combo. The 3310 Holley or the AVS would be my choice depending if you like Holleys or Carters.
Out of the box the AVS will work great, the Holley will require tuning or it will be a dog in my recent experience.

Never, ever did I get a carb out of the box that was plug 'n play, regardless if it was an Eddy or a Holley. For years I fought with both and I have finally settled in on Holleys. Regardless of which carb you choose, it will be a huge plus on your resume to buy a book that covers your carb and learn how to tune it.
