I have seen that(pitting) in stock motors that had a lot of miles on them, what oil are you using? I have also seen flaking in the cam bearings when used in a high RPM motor with a lot of spring pressures. I'm probally going to try the caged needle roller cam bearins on all of my serious motors with roller cams and high spring pressures from now on.

no, are you sure the "pitting" isn't embedded debris? do you have any pictures?

We have seen pitting like Drams says form debris, also if some one use sand paper or crocus cloth or sanding flapper wheels to clearence the bearing the grit get in the surface and pits it all to hell, that's why we usually cut bearings or use Scotch pad type of material to touch them up.

Both these engines use valvoline/kendall 20/50 , both have an issue with #2 cam bearing , both engines had bearings fitted @ different machine shops , the 512" B engine is pitted @ the centre of bearing & the 605" pitted & both edges.

Sorry , no pics.

I agree on the Scotch pad

I don't know if you have bearing fatigue or if it is embedded particles in the bearing. The fact the same syptoms has occured on two different motors, fitted by two different shops, would make me think this could be embedded particles & not related to spring pressures.

When using a wet n dry type paper, even fine grades such as 1200 grade, the particles tend to get inbedded in the soft bearing material. Even, with the most thorough cleaning afterwards, you will not remove the particles.
