All of a sudden the light came on & lifters started ticking?. I'd pull the dist/inter shaft & spin the pump (ccw) w a drill/5/16" hex shaft like when you are preoiling & see what happens.

I had accelerated from a light - maybe cracked the throttle some but nothing hard ran the RPM's up a bit and when I shifted into second noticed the light come on. I got the car over to place where I could stop it and noticed an increase in vlalve train noise - oil level is fine. My guess was either the pump (spring) or shaft. I will pull the distributor in a bit and see try to spin the pump with a drill.
If it is the pump - I can get a seal power replacement pump locally - stock pump. If I want to use a melling or go with a "High Preasure or High Volume" it will have to come off island. Either way is fine as long as it is the right way. Thanks again.
I would do what you plan first, pull the distributor and use a priming rod. See what happens. Next, pull the valvecovers and check for a broken lifter or rocker gear. The "increase valvetrain noise " and oil pressure loss all at the same time usually indicates a lifter broke or popped out as already suggested.
I'd also pull the oil filter and have it cut open to check for debris. ( if you dont find the problem with the distributor out.)
If none of the above, could be broken pick up, sheared shaft, broken tip, stuck relief etc.
Standard oil pump is more than adequate.

hi check your oil pump relief valve , a piece of something may have caused it to stick open ? also look inside the pump by disassembling it ! good luck

I once ran into the same problem. Stranded on the road side. Pulled intake, distrebutor, pump driveshaft etc. Could not find anything wrong. Then pulled the pump and found that the relief valve was not moving smooth so I R&R'd it till it moved freely, packed the pump with grease and started the engine. Got oil pressure and drove 100 miles home without any issues! Check the pump. It is worth a shot!
