Is there such a beast that will pass track tech?
I've got a new convertable project that I'd like to take to the track and will definately be quicker than 13.49. Probably low 12's when all is done.
I think you can get away with swing out door bars that are removable but what about the rest? Perhaps the 4 point hoop and down bars (vert down bars, not thru the package tray down bars) can be welded solid but the door and harness bar bolt in?
My concern is keeping the back seat usable for passengers without the tubes close to heads.

Yes. There are several available for Fox bodies that bolt in and will pass tech, so other bolt-ins should be legal. Like these: Maximum Motorsports

it's 13.49 for convertibles.

I don't see how they could be as safe. This picture really makes me question that. This happened at a local track and this car had a bolt in roll bar. Granted it was a pretty extreme wreck but the cage pushed through the floor and you can see it sticking up in front of the rear tires. Thankfully nobody was hurt in this but it wasn't because of the roll bar. Here is more pics of the wreck. http://jalopnik.com/5390934/mustang-cover-boy-tries-to-corner-flips-over-tire-wall

I may be completly wrong but I think a weld in bar would hold up much better. To get through the floor it would have to tear the welded plates out am I correct? Where in a bolt in bar the plates could distort much easier and be pushed through the floor with no welds trying to hand onto them? Just thinking with the keyboard here lol. I know the place that built the mustang above. I am willing to bet the roll bar was chrome as well as the bolts that held it in .

Once I put a bar in I have to run Harnesses right? Or does the 13.49 convert spec change things?

With the bar, you are required to run up to date 5 point harness. The cross bar has to be welded in, no bolt in, period. I talked to NHRA 's chief tech guy a couple of years ago about it and what he said about some magazine articles that implied they were acceptable, was not pretty! I would encourage you to weld the bar in, there is NO WAY a bolt in bar is as strong. If you decide to remove it later, you can cut through the bar at the sill plates and grind it smooth, it won't show under the carpet. Back seat access will be a PITA because of the crossbar. You have a convertible and it is flexible, hopefully you are putting in subframe connectors and they should be welded in too. I tried bolt in and they wallowed out around the bolts, this is just stamped sheetmetal, it needs welding. I was like you a few years ago, NHRA then required a bar at 11.99 and I was dipping into the 11's. I did not want to put a bar in, but I ended up doing it. It made a huge difference in structural rigidity and more than made up for the downside. You can get T-boned driving on the street just as easy as at the track. The choice is yours, But I would do it right. Just my .02. Lee.

I think that pure stock convertable holds true unless you have a power adder? Does this only include modern cars?
