I'm not certain about the different 71 chargers but a hardtop has both side windows that roll down and no B pillar above the door. A Coupe has a fixed rear quarter window, may or may not have a B pillar above the door. (In the case of 71 chargers, NONE of them had the B pillar (post))
I just fornd a site that confirmed that the coupe had fixed 1/4 windows. Thanks everybody!

I think it has to do with weather the rear side windows are fixed or go up and down.
I don't recall which is which though.
yes a hard top all the windows roll down and there is a large space. You can even have a c-body 4 door hard top. A coupe is a "fixed" rear window or has a "post" between the front and rear glass. So I'd think in the 71 chargers a coupe would be one of those S/E types that has the post and the small rear glass.

No... 71/72 SEs are with roll down glasses.
73/74 SEs are fixed but with the special louver treatment. Only chargers wuth a REAL B post are 73/74 SEs and M07 coded cars

agreed... those weren't WL21 or WH23 cars, they got its own VIN code, WS or WM. both accomplished by 23 numbers what it means HARDTOP
since 72 Rallye were packages added to the existant VIN code, and not a diff code. Just WL WH or WP ( SEs ) you could get Rallye package ( A77 code ) on WL21 or WH23
