question. i have an older dual point accel distributor. i am looking to get rid of the points.accel offers an optical pickup conversion kit for around $60. the distributor i am running right now is a much older unit, still has the cable drive tach attachment in the housing. anyway it is a magnetic pickup and seems to work just fine.
should i buy the optic kit? this distributor is going in my back up engine with roughly the same setup i am running now. i am running under 7000 rpm through the traps.
also my ignition box is Mallory HyFire VI Digital CD Ignition.

Call Mallory to see if the optical conversion is compatable with your Mallory box I remember a fellow race that had a Accel distributor that he wanted to use on a MSD 7AL box and it needed a adater to go from(I think) the optical to the magnetic pick up I don't know anything about the Mallory Hy Fire CD boxes, sorry

They both work equaly well but the Optical is more sensitive, simple voltage spike and no more optics... magnet can take more abuse.

The optical pick-up produces a DC square wave signal. The electromagnetic pick-up produces a AC sine wave. The AC signal requires the ignition box to have a analog to digital converter to process the signal.

Either one should be good to 8000+ rpm.

Actually a mag pickup produces a tan or cot wave depending on polarity.

Not to get this to far off topic, But isnt a MSD distrib a magnetic pickup?

My reason for asking is i figured if that wa the case, then i could get a nice distrib and still use my mopar electronic ignition setup. I figure it'd be an easy swap. MSD instructions say no, but a two wire magnetic pickup can't be any different from stock---right?

Outcast Dodge guy.
