1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4.0 straight six and automatic. (86,000 miles). Only on cold mornings, second gear winds out for a long time and then when it finally shifts into third the transmission free-wheels as if in neutral. I have to let off the throttle to get it to go into third. After the trans warms up this problem quits. The rest of the day it shifts normal. Please let me know what could be causing this. Thank You.

Same problem with a 2000 Grand Cherokee. One mechanic wanted $1700 to replace the trans!! I've had people tell me the bands can be replaced/adjusted and may fix it. I just went to store got some Lucas Oil Transmission Fix, and gets me through the winter months until it runs without problems in warmer weather.

alot of my customers who dont run the atf+4 chrysler fluid have that problem. if your running dex/merc fluid switch it out and try the +4.

If the filter isn't restricting flow, the problem is hardened/shrunk seals in the front clutch, once the fluid warms up the seals soften enough to seal.

An additive like Trans-X or Lucas will soften the hardened seals.
