using the rubber handle of a hammer I drove the oil pump grear in place, it is off by one tooth and I can not seem to be able to pull it back out with a very long needle nose pliers. Is there a special tool to do this?

Just rewire the distributor to match the new position. BTW why did you need to drive the gear it? It should have just slide in. Did you ream out the brass bushing to fit the shaft?

Have you tried twisting the drive backwards with a large screwdriver? That will usually pop them free.

It is a new bushing and I tried it prior to installing it and it slide over the shaft fine. I installed the bushing then greased the shaft and pushed down as far as I could reach and then lightly tapped the gear home. The book I have says the notch on the top of the gear needs to be in the same line as the crank, it is now one gear slot toward the top of the engine. Are you saying it is ok to leave it.

If the other methods have failed you. Take the oil pump off , and you can tap the shaft up and out from that end.

I'm going to show you the neatest little tool you'll ever have in your toolbox.
Absolutely invaluable if the intake manifold is still on and you want to extract or install the distributer gear properly aligned.

You'll need:
Aprox. 18" of PVC pipe
(1) PVC pipe union
(1) 8" ty-wrap

Make a small chamfer at one end of the pipe

Lay the ty-wrap onto the chamfer

Install the union

Insert the dizzy gear into the union. It's a 'jam' fit.
Align the slot on the dizzy with the ty-wrap.

The best distributer gear installation (and removal) tool in the world and
it cost next to nothing.

I just went through this and got a clothes hanger and made a hook on the end and pulled on the hanger behind the gear and put a screw driver in the drive slot so I could pull and twist at the same time. Ran the shaft in and out a couple of times in the new bushing and it fred up nice and smooth.

Here is your first PROBLEM .. the bushing needs to be SIZED after install , the correct installation tool does this , the fact that you had to DRIVE the gear in tells me you didn't have the correct tool .

Remove the the oilpump and use a wood or alum dowel and drive it back out , if you don't the bushing will more than likely sieze on the shaft and spin in the block potentially wrecking the block ...

I have been able to always remove the oil pump drive with needle nose pliers ,I have even had luck spinning it back UP wit ha long screwdriver on occasion . The drive ALWAYS just falls into place , if you have to tap it in you have a PROBLEM ...

I pulled the oil pump and with little effort was able to drive the shaft out but can not get the bushing out. I cleaned all the grease off the shaft that I caked on it prior to the first install and put some 30 weight oil on it instead and seems like it may slide in now, do I need to look for anything else first.

what do you mean it SEEMS LIKE IT MAY slide in now ? either it goes in easy or it doesn't .

It's highly possible you SIZED it by DRIVING in the shaft , not how I would have done it mind you .

As far as getting the bushing out you don't need to unless you damaged it. where there any bushing looking pieces on the end of the oil pump when you dropped it out ? take an air gun and blow air down the passage , oil pump off , to clean out anything that might have come off the bushing during your shadetree sizing job .

Did it drop in like that the first time or did you have to drive it all the way in ? it should just go right in , if you have to tap it all all it's still too tight .

Is the timing cover on the engine right now ? If not I would pull out the cam and make sure it drops all the way in and FREELY spins .

But it needs to drop in all the way to it's final seated position.

I don't have one handy but I'm pretty sure the part that rides inside the bushing is a little bigger than the rest of the shaft length ?
