I mixed up some resin and hardener to fill in the wrong seat holes. Covered the bottom of the holes with tape, filled the holes with resin, laid cloth over it, smeared resin around it. Guess what, it's not setting up, apparently not enough hardener,It's messy. Yes the wife has already informed me that I'm a real genius. What's my way out of this boo boo?

What kind of temperature are you working in ? ....did you actually measure-out the hardener? ... MAT(instead of cloth) is best-er for doing something like this.

It's about 50 in the garage. Of course I measured the hardener, 8 drops, about a cup of resin, or cup and a half, I don't really remember after all the fumes. I tried using a heat gun the next day, but it seemed to soften it up. Maybe I'll try a heat lamp tonight. What is MAT?

I mixed up a new hot batch, poured it over the soft stuff, let it sit overnight with a heatlamp, perfect, done. Next up armaflex interior.

Sorry I missed this til now .... in 50 degree temps .. you should not have to use a heat lamp. Plus .. using a heat lamp will not allow the best bonding of the new to old material.

Mat ? .. is a thicker material that will conform better to irregular surfaces.

8 drops per cup? on smaller repairs I usually add a little more than 2% and I'm with Doc, heat lamp can do more damage than help, a little heat to warm up the part is OK, but not so much heat that you see smoke and blisters,

did you bevel the edges of the holes?

No, I didn't bevel the holes. It gets better, when I put a new layer of resin and glas on top it seemed to do the job, so I continued on to insulate the floor, however when I took the tape off the bottom of the holes the unhardened resin inside the holes oozed out.

Acetone, rags and elbow grease will clean out the ooze.

I have to figure out a way to fill the holes from the bottom now, maybe glue some plugs in or something. It's only two holes per side, and they are sealed on top with cloth and resin, but it bothers me that I bungled the job.

get some fiberglass matting and shred it up. mix it with the resin and put it in the holes from underneath. it should stick in there without any problems.

Fiberglass resin gel has a more body than standard liquid resin and will spread more like body filler. You can cut 'glass mat or cloth and mix it with the gel for more strength.Tape wit wax paper over the hole will keep the material in place until dry.

grind the edges of the holes, prep the area, take the mat and pull strands, don't cut or chop, just rip and mix them in the resin with stick till it becomes a paste, pack it in the holes and use some masking tape over the are till cured, you can also add some Aerosil filler,it's a fumed silica, most marine stores will have it
