How would you build a 518 trans for 550hp/torq?

How would you build a 518 to take 550hp/torq in my sig car. Assume 4000 pound car with drag radials. Would be a mostly street car with some strip. I'd say 90% street, 10% strip at most. Overdrive would be setup to run at low load/cruise levels only, not WOT. Not interested in putting power through the overdrive gear.
What parts would you use? I was thinking a good rebuild kit plus the transgo TFOD-HD2 shift kit. What other goodies would you use? Bands? Sprags? Other? Not looking for anything too exotic, engine rpm will not exceed 6000rpm. Any other mods that should be done?
I don't have a trans yet, however the 46RE's are readily available in the yards, the RH's seem to be a bit tougher to find around here. I would just have to go with which ever I could find first. I know tearing into the trans would tell of anything else that needs to be done, but I'm interested in what would have to be done right off the bat for this power level.
Also, I understand the normal 518's will run a 727 converter, but the lockup ones won't. Is there a decent source for lockup performance converters. Not interested in a ton of stall speed, 2700-3000 would be nice.

That's not a lot of power for those trannies. You should be fine with a basic rebuild and a shift kit to change the pressures.
Get a 46RE for the upgraded internals and run the 46RH valve body.

I don't think that is possible since the RE will not have the HYD gov circuit.
An RH or 518 shouldn't be hard to find , RE is 96 up , but he needs to decide if he wants lockup or not .
Build the OD section to Diesel V10 specs and you'll be fine , everything forward is a 727 , don't worry about the sprag , it's a much better piece in the OD trans , think it's 14 elements in a plastic holder for it and the springs . I broke my output shaft on the trans in my ram power braking against the convertor to build boost with the trans in drive , rear band not applied , didn't hurt it , truck was fixed at the dealer and they didn't do anything other than pull the OD unit to fix , left the trans in the truck .

Okay I think I may have been a little confused, or at least I am now, lol. So the 95 and prior 518 with the 3-wire connector for overdrive/lockup is the 46RH? The 518 with the two-wire connector for overdrive and no lockup is also called the 46RH?? What does it take to build the OD section to diesel/v10 specs? I'm just trying to compile a list of parts for now. I was checking out bulkpart.com and they've got most of what I think I need. They've got their performance rebuild kits for a bit over 200 bucks, 150 for the transgo shift kit for od trans. Should I be doing anything else? Bands, accumulator or servo upgrades? Basically I want to put the parts on the shopping list that are going to get done either way, then add anything if there's more wrong with it when I tear it apart. Thanks for the info and keep it comming.

RH Lockup (95 and older) is 3 wire RH Non Lockup (95 and older) is 2 wire RE (96 and newer) is Multiwire This is 518(727 based)only, the 500 is a whole nuther deal. 4 = # of forward gears 6 = level of service (strength) (5, 6, or 7) R = Rear wheel drive H = Type of over drive control (Hydraulic or Electronic) I think it's the ATSG manual that has some pretty good info in it if you want to get started aquainting yourself with these trannys. Bulkpart has the manual and a video. I really like having a video. go to: http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/mercha...Product_Count=1

The local u-pull should have the trans I need, will just have to make it out there before it gets too much colder outside.
Better hurry! Is getting cold fast!
Good luck with the OD trans. That should be great for cruising.

Thanks for the info. For some reason at first I was thinking the RH was the 2-wire and the RE was the 3-wire. 2-wire or 3-wire which ever I can find at the yard. Not terribly concerned about the lockup. Yeah I saw the ATSG manual and video on there and I think I will pick up both of them. I'm sure I could manage it with just the manual but the video would probably be worth it. I plan to mate motor to trans with a jw ultrabell. The local u-pull should have the trans I need, will just have to make it out there before it gets too much colder outside.
if thats the same VID i have its pretty lame

Well since I doubt there's more than one 518 video out there I have to ask in what way was it lame? Not much useful info and too much of a general overview? I just checked and that's video's not cheap. If it's crap I'll pass.

How are you going to fit it in your car? Tailshaft is huge.
That was going to be my question. Especially with the isolated t-bar crossmember. That's what's scared me the most about trying this.... Make sure you take lots of pics!

Yeah that's the last main hurdle I've got to work through. I do know it has been done on a 73-74 B body and I've messaged a guy I know who did it, hope he responds. I'm sure someone else on here did it, but the search has been changed to a max range of 1 year.

The diesel/V10 od has more clutches and steels in the direct clutch pack , that's inside the unit in the OD case (I can't remember now if I have an extra clutch and steel in there or just tighter clearance need to find my notes) and possibly more pinions in the planet ... not sure on that one but you should be fine with the gasser planet ... The big thing is the clutch and steel count , more cluthes is more holding power , it's also possible to put an extra clutch and steel in the OD clutch pack that is on the rear of the main case , but you have to machine the pressure plate like people have done to put 5 clutches in a 4 clutch drum with the thicker steels. These mods will hold upwards of 1000 plus lb/ft of torque .
