Look for the longer version of the starter that has more windings.

ok guys here's the deal...i tried over the last 3 weeks 4 rebuilt starters in a row , for my 440 , univ numbering system on the rebuilts is 17084, which is for a 89 dodge diplomat 318 v-8, nippo starter ...they WONT start a 440 ON EVERY TURN OF THE KEY, they click , then start the car then click, then start the car etc, etc ..., or at least the ones i bought wouldnt , REASON; the shaft and throw-out gear hooked to the clutch in the starter wont shoot out far enough to engage the flywheel on the 440 every time ; fine for a small blk, and its the 1.4kw hi-output too, but ng for the 440, and 383 also ....
The correct REBUILT NUMBER for the 440 and 383 , is the number 17466, which a bit smaller in overall size than the 17084, and has approx a 1/8in longer inside snout nose to shoot the shaft out farer and engage the flywheel teeth on the 383 and 440, ...and it will also fit the sml blocks as well ....but that is the correct number, andits application is for the 95' and up Dodge ram full size p/u's w the v-8's,numbered as 17466 ; ...the 2 re-built starters even look the same , except when u put them side-by-side and look closely at them ...if u put the 17084 and the 17466 side by side , u'll find the 17466 is a shade shorter , and a shade narrower, w a shade shorter armature housing ...the 17466 is THE HOT SET-UP FOR WEDGES AND SMALL BLOCKS TOO ; IT WILL FIT BOTH ...whenever possible on the rebuilts , try and get the 1.4kw starter vs the .84kw starter ,especially on a higher comp motor ; on anything under 10.5-1 comp , it wont matter anyway ....as far as new goes, power master sells them , and MP sells them also , but they are a lil pricey; ...i found a nice gentleman , named jack kirkland , aka ' 500amp ', calls his company , auto electric in no. michigan ...he sells new , take off , chry nippondenzo starters C H E A P ,at ONLY 89.00...new, not rebuilt ....i bought a couple from him , got them in 3 days , and they are new nippo's, and are the hi-output ones , and WILL START our 440 and 383 engines ....they are brandie new , and cost less from him than the rebuilts cost me wholesale from a distributor ...so if ya want a good deallook up mr kirkland ....he can be found selling his wares on ebay , under 'mopar starters ', or 'starters', and is called the 500 amp man....he's the only one selling NEW chry starters , and advertises them as take-off's...look u'll find him i did ....and his starters are excellent.
A LITTLE NOTE ; on the 440 and probably the 383 engines also , the positive starter stud sticks up a 1/8-1/4in to high and just touches the block...U DONT WANT THAT , IT'LL GROUND OUT ....JUST , trim down the top of the stud with a whizzer or a hack saw , clean up the threads, and voila , problem cured ....i know this for fact on the new starters from mr kirkland , and probably applies to any new mopar starter on a 440 or 383 , the re-builts that i used didnt have this problem because of a diff stud arrangement , but be careful nonetheless... happy moparing
First of all 17466 and 17084 are only LESTER part numbers, parts stores use them. They are a generic parts I.D number. Manufacturers and their part number for the 17466 are; ARC-#S1766, ARROW-#35-2414, BOSCH-#SR6504X, CHRYSLER-#53005984, LUCAS-#S2403,NIPPONDENSO-#'s 128000-781, 128000-7810, NIPPONDENSO remanufactured-#9712809-781, PIC-#190-365, WAI-#2-1383-ND, 2-1398-ND,2-1398-ND-1.....
Chrysler doesn't make their own so it will have their number plus one of the others.
Here is the list of vehicles they were on;

That's what I have on the 17466, Lucas uses the same part number for both 17466 and 17084. #17466 is 21mm shorter and the case is notched out by the gear so its exposed more. Hope this helps.
