What engines were available in these cars? Is there a range of them or just a 440? I don't know much about them. Thanks all.

Newport Royals (the base model) could have the 360 too.

Quote from Allpar:

A Newport Royal subseries was also brought out in 1971, at the bottom price range; it was the only Chrysler to use the new LA series 360 V8 (or, for that matter, any LA-series engine).

Plus, I owned one. If need be, I might be able to find a copy of its VIN.

The 360 was the base engine in 1971 for a Newport .Yes, they could be had with a 383 or a 440.

Who's way off ?

Mopar either "Bent over backwards to give the most options to buyers" or "threw whatever they had on the rack to shove cars out the door", depending who you talk to. It's always interesting to hear about the cars that were "never made with that *****". But yet, here they are.

I have to support Commando. The 360 didn't start in Chrysler until 1972. Even that was rare. They were more popular in 73. If I recall, they were the base engine in the Newport and Royal. I remember seeing one and was shell shocked when they first came out. (Now you know how old I am) They were put into Chrysler because of the Gas Crunch of 72. Up until then, Chrysler was maintaining it's image as being the top line car and wanted the power to remain.

Commando and I are both members there. I think you will find one of two things about all this.

1. It was very late in the 71 production and not officially there, as the 360 was not officially adopted.
2. The engine and trans were swapped some time ago. Not being able to see the car, doesn't do any good. If you read the whole thread, it is very possuble the car got an engine swap. It's a drop in and easy to do. You can go Big Block to small block on the wiring, but not the other way around unless someone butchered it.

I've been around Chrysler full size for 0ver 50 years, and that's just the time I could lean over the distributors on a small block.

It's either the car was produced in September or October or it's not the original engine. Remember, the 71 and 72 look very much the same. Same sheetmetal, just the bumpers and grill and tail lights changed. And the 70 and 71 Chrylser were almost identicle. You had to see the tial lights to be sure. How do we know someone didn't retitl the car with a 71 title to make a buck? Some states don't check.

Have fun guys. . . I am not going to argue with the experts. There's too much evidence to the contrary

Well I guess I stand corrected. Never saw a 360 in Chrysler before 73. You know Stan, I been doing this for a good week and half. LOL

All thge literature is very misleading. Maybe it's a mid year thing??????

It was very possible to have found this happen. The 360 was officially introduced in 1971 and was available in the c body cars.

What I find incredible is how people will argue that a car DOES NOT EXIST and will insist that a car YOU OWNED didn't exist either.

Good lord people.

NO it was NOT swapped in. YES, the VIN decoded to 360. NO, I don't own the car anymore.

Being a stripped down C (ie: not loaded down with options and sound deadener), the 360 was pretty decent in the Newport.
