3500 rpm at 45mph.

Taking it in. Any advice on what to look for?

Don't know codes yet. Guy at tranny shop said input or output sensor or possibly internal problem. Impossible to tell until he runs codes.

Probably one of the tranny speed sensors. Since they're electronically controlled trannies there is no governor and when one of the sensors goes it stays in 1st gear.

Happened to my wife's 2000 Sebring JXI, IIRC cost about $150 at the dealership

on some chryslers if you turn the key on and off 4 times without starting the engine it will run the codes for you. On the last time leave the key in the on position but do not start the car. All this has to be done within like 15 seconds or so.

When I worked at the dodge dealer 3 out of 4 cars in limp mode were doing it because of a speed sensor. If you had to guess that is a good place to start. If you want to know for sure you need to pull the codes

Our 98 van would do that once in a while. Shut it down and sit a couple of minutes and start it and go. wouldn't act up for monthes again. Never any codes.

Is the speedo working? If not that is usually the speed sensor.Pulling the codes is the best way though.Rocky

A brief update.

Last night we dropped it off at tranny shop. On the way there, it ran fine, shifted fine and in general behaved well. The fluid is full, red and not burnt or smelly.

I did the on-off-on-off-on thing and all it said was DONE. Tranny guy said tranny codes don't show up in that computer, or at least all of them. The check engine light is still on though.

I think it is a sensor.

Code of 1776, Solenoid Valve stuck

I called the shop, he wants to drop the pan and "look around." The car drove fine for him and for his shop guy.

I told him do not drop pan, do not change fluid, just stop working on it. I haev terrible luck with trannys once they are opened up.

Whatcha yall think?

we've had a few of these come through the dealership w/ this code.there is a TSB out on this issue.it explains in detail what to look for and how to fix.TSB -21-008-04.it could be as simple as a cable adjustment....OR...contaminated valve body.take it to a dealer, have them take a look at it,IMO this will save u alot of running around and throwing parts at it.if the dealer is to expensive to fix,pay them the check out time and then maybe take it to ur tanny shop,w/ the exact info u need to get it fixed correctly.let me know if u need any info on the valve body regarding pricing,or avalability...Alan

after about 3 attemts to repair a valve body for this (usually stuck switch valve in the VB)I quit trying to repair them. Mopar valve bodies have dropped down in price. And I think there is a reman avail.
IMO - Put a valve body and save the headaches

How funny you shouldpost this. I JUST hung up with my uncle who owns Keller Motors in Perryville MO. He told me their policy on the P1776 error is to replace the valve body and solenoid pack as a unit and only use NEW parts. He was reading to me from an on-line Chrysler repair source, I dunno what it was, but it stated only to put in new parts because often reman solenoids have the same problem.

That dealership experience with only installing the solenoid pack or the VB is that half the time, it will need the other part. So now for $650, they put in both.

I am going to read my manual and if this is straight forward, I will be doing it this weekend.

Any pointers? I'm assuming it is a drop the pan and drop the VB and Solenoid pack as a group and swap it out. No special tools or settings required. Parts shopping now.

I don't think u can still get the V/B new, that part # supercedes (sp) to a re-man #,the only way to get it is a re-man #.the re-man V/B is readily available and is around $350.00.also,IMHO...the V/B is most likely your issue and not the solenoid.in my experience w/ LH cars that have this code (p1776) is caused by a contaminated V/B.normaly caused by ,dirt in the fluid gets into the V/B and locks that switch valve in the V/B, as earlier stated....hope this helped...keep us informed on how it goes...good luck ........Alan

I got a quote for $387. It is the combined package with the solenoid pack and the valve body. Does not look too hard. I should be doing this Saturday.

I am going to do the whole thing. 5 new quarts of ATF4, filter, valvebody. Supposed to be 19 degrees, so that is right on par with this kind of repair. The only thing better would be if the truck needs a water pump, oh wait, it smells like it does......

Just for fun and for the folks at dodgeintrepid.net, i'm gonna photo as I go. I could post the pics here if anyone is interested. Hopefully by Sat afternoon, it'll back on the road.

To any of you techs who have done this. Is the "Quick Learn" procedure required as the book states, after I have replaced the VB?

reason I ask is, I don't have a DRB tool. The book says to do it.

quick learn should be done, If not it will take a while for the TCM to relearn clutch fill volumnes/ Thus shift kinda odd compared to what your used to.

Personally I've always had access to a DRB so I've never really tried to run it without it.

just an FYI - Cut the filter open when you get it out and ck for clutch debris in it. If there is , plan on an overhaul SOON
