I have a 1986 Dodge ramcharger with a 318. The truck was not running when I got it. I have replaced timing chain and gears, distrubiter, cap, ignition coil, plugs, wires, rotary button, alternator, battery. I have to spray gas in the carb and it will crank and run. Sounds good until you give it gas. When you put it in gear and give it gas it back fires threw the carb. The number 7 plug gets sut build up on it. Have also tried two different carbs. Will also pop in park while at a high rpm. Does anyone have sugestions on what I can do now.

I have done all the things you just suggested over and over. It is still poping from the carb. Do you know something else I can try.

Is your exhaust system plugged up. Had a similar problem and it ended up being the exhaust system plugged up with nuts & rust.

No I have not checked it. Should I drop the exhaust manafold and go from there or what do you think would be the best way.

Is your acc. pump shot not working? If not it will cause the same symptoms. Also I had a challenger once that had a bad ground wire from the engine to the frame when you give it throttle the engine moved in the mounts,(losing whatever ground it had and caused a similar result.

Run a compression test - or a leak down test to see if all the valves are sealing properly.

Scince your pouring gas in the carb to get it to start is the reason for my question. Take the breather off the carb and with the engine not running look down inside the throat of the carb. while moving the throttle by hand (push it all the way open from completely closed position)and you should see two streams of gas shooting into the engine. If not start by fixing this first.

It can be as minor as a dirty carb, or as serious as a valve or rounded cam lobe. If the thing seems to run strong on all cylinders, I would think it a fuel-carb issue.

Last 80's 318 I seen do that had a burnt exhuast valve on the sooty cylinder.

Carbs do not cause an engine to misfire or backfire. They only introduce fuel/air mixture to the engine. You say the firing orders is correct.
I would say you have an intake lobe wiped off the cam. One thing you might check, is pull the rocker covers off and make sure you don't have a pushrod shoved through a rocker. If you don't see any problems there, roll engine over and check for movement on all rockers. I suspect it's the intake lobe gone though. Another problem could be head gasket burned between cylinders...3/5..4/6.

I said intake,,,meant ehaust...sorry.

You say that you have checked and rechecked the firing order and the plug wire routing but this sounds exactly like a 5/7 wire cross. A vertually unnoticable miss till a load is put on the engine. Those 2 culinders are in sequence in the firing order and right next to each other on the engine. Being so close together produces a miss that is not a total miss as the sequence is so close together that the second cylinder in the sequence is almost in firing position anyway.

Just pulled off the rocker arms and three push rods are bent. I know they need to be replaced but can that cause my problem.

Did that thing sit for a few years by chance? If so, the fuel system could be varnished up and you may have valves sticking in the guides. That could have caused rods to bend.
