I just pulled the driveshaft off my 73 340 Challenger. The casting number on the driveshaft is 2883630. The inside yoke measurement is 2 1/8" The book I have says the casting number should be 2996162. Can anyone verify this casting number?

My Book shows a 2996162 fits a 69-70 w and x body car. I am not showing a 2883630, but I am showing a 2883636 fitting a 1972 b body u joint type 7290..dia. 3.25X 43.60 long 8.75 axle 340 motor.

Your 2996142 should fit 71-74 with 7260s 3.25 dia. 45.79 long auto tran 8.75 axles.340 motor.actually fit 340,383-2,225,316,360 in a j or challenger.

Arte you looking at the number cast into the u-joint ends or the number stamped into the tube?

The closest number in my book is for a casting number 2883656, only 2 numbers off on the casting number 2883630. This casting number 2883656 is for a 72 Challenger 340-ci 8 3/4 45.60 3 1/4 Type 7290. The type for the driveshaft I have (2 1/8 yoke) is type 7260. I'm starting to think that I do have the correct driveshaft, and that the casting number listed in my book, 2996142, is incorrect.

Again, the casting number I see is 2883630, and it is located inside the yoke area, not on the shaft where I thought they were located.

That's the yoke number.

The shaft number will be stamped in the tube. There will also be a date code.
Look 12-18" from both ends. Although it could be anywhere on the shaft.

The 2996142 should be you drive shaft, fit 71,72,73 j challender with 340, has 7260.
