How much can a stock block be decked? How about 452 cast iron heads?
If either of these are cut, how much does the intake side of the head need to be cut? Anything else need to be machined?

Thanks, Brian

I have two old SS Street Hemi blocks that have been decked around .100"-.120". I wouldn't recommend doing that. On a stock block and heads, I've heard .060" is around the maximum recommended. I prefer to take as little off as necessary. It sounds like you need different pistons to me.

i have taken as much as .250 off a stock deck on a block, 452 heads we usually take .110 off the deck side to get them around 63 cc's and .125 plus off the intake side never have any problems.

For every .010 off the deck surface the intake side needs to be milled .0123 , whether it comes off the head or the block the heads intake surface needs to be cut ... also note for every .010 off the block deck the valley end rails should be cut , .0123 off the end rails , just like the heads .

I have a 383 that's been decked .018 and a set of heads I was going to use were cut about .040 , with the intake surface cut the required amount , I ended up having to cut .075 off the valley end rails to get the intake tub gasket to fit right .

A friend had .160 taken off a 440 to get the 8 to 1 pistons up!!! LOL!!
I have milled a set of 906 .110 also worked good for years till one cracked back in the intake bowel where it was ported a little thin!!
aluminum is the only way to go now!!!

One of my smog 440's was .2 in the hole. If I'd been smart I would have used those pistons with a 4.15 crank. Almost as cheap and definetly more effective than decking and then milling 4 head surfaces.
