Could use some help...

Changing plugs today (36,000 miles); the number 5 coil pulled away from the top of the spark plug boot during removal. Looks like it's a looser fit then the spark plug end, or there was no silicone on the boot to plug from the factory.

The boot absolutely will not let go of the plug. I've been trying to pull it out of the spark plug tube, but nothing doing. The rubber just keeps stretching and tearing.

Any one have any ideas how to get this boot off the plug?

Thanks,

Mike

Well, a few bloody knuckles and an hour later it's out.

The boot was bonded to the base of the plug. Had to cut it out with a very small, very sharp knife.

Number eight won't let go either, but I'm done with it.

Now to find a new coil...

Hope this helps someone else,

Mike

Doesn't the 2008 4.7 have two spark plugs per-cylinder?

Yes, the intake side need to be replaced around 30,000 miles, the exhaust side are good for 100,000 miles (those must be really fun to change).

Two different kinds of spark plugs, too, and they are not available at auto parts stores.

Neither are the coil or the coil boot, apparently, and no local junk yards have the newer 4.7L to scavenge parts from.

Well, at least it wasn't a total loss of a gorgeous day. Had to pull the Charger 500 out of storage to drive around town trying to find a coil boot somewhere.

Oh yeah, the number 8 boot still won't let go, so my Jeep is down and out for the weekend.

Hope the weather stays nice...

Had the same thing happen with a boot on the 5.7 in my Charger. The boot turns out to be a dealer item and they do not sell it separately from the coil. But the dealer sent it in as a warranty item and I didn't pay. But car was down for a few days while they got the coil. Couldn't believe that only 1 dealership in NYC had it in stock, and was way to far for me to go to get it.
