I'll be swapping a 1966 dated 383 to a 1972 steel crank 440. Will my 383 Torque converter work? Im concerned about balancing issues.
Thanks
DJ

You also may have a fit problem with spline count on input shaft and diameter of converter snout register to crankshaft center.

If the current 383 converter never comes out of the transmission, it seems the snout shaft diameter will be the only issue. What about weights welded on the torque converter? I havent removed the 383 yet so I dont know what it looks like yet.

I would be concerned too since the cranks are different weights. I'd be looking for a converter from a steel crank 440.

There should be no weights if both are steel (forged shaft) engines.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

The convertors will work (both applications are neutral balance). the 66 has different transmission splines than the 72 transmission so you will have to keep the 66 convertor with the 66 transmission or the 72 convertor with the 72 transmission (which I think you know). Also the flexplate convertor bolt pattern could be different so check that.
