I purchased a valve cover stud kit from the local speed shop. After driving the car for a few days it developed a massive oil leak from the valve covers (trashing my ceramic coated TTi's). When I removed the covers I found that 6 or 8 of the studs broke. I was able to extract all but 2 of the broken studs, and am currently faced with pulling one of the heads. If I have to go that route I was thinking about getting some work done while I have the heads off the car. I remembered reading on the board that someone was doing CNC porting of the 440 EB heads, and getting 300+cfm on the intake side.

  • Any suggestions for removing broken studs? I've tried a left hand hardened bit and a "kobalt" bit.
  • Tips or tricks for removing burned on oil stains from ceramic coated headers?
  • Who is the preferred CNC head porter? Will you take an exchange? How long does it take? Price? ETC...

Thanks,

Greg

Is there any of the stud protruding from the hole? Even if its just a little bit?
It would be easy to take a 5/16 nut and mig the stud to the nut.Heat the area up around the stud and it will fall out.
If nothing else its possible to blow the stud out with a torch set without hurting or burning the head.

Jeff @ Modern Cylinder head in Mich. normally has a porting special in the fall, that would be my choice.

I tried the MIG/Nut trick with no luck. I think there is something wrong with the studs themselves (defect of sort). A couple of them had enough of the shank left for 2 nuts, and I attempted to tighten them against each other in order to back out the stud. The stud snapped as soon as I barely tightened the nuts (maybe 5 ft/lbs). The hardened left-hand drill bit won't even scratch them, and the Kolbalt bit cut about 1/16in then quit.

If he has Eddy heads I would not try burning the studs out.He will have instant junk as aluminum melts a lot easier than steel will.Pull the head before you screw them up.Rocky

As far as having them CNC ported Jeff at Modern Cylinder heads is the cats meao, the Bees knees and so on I have a set of his Eddy RPM CNC heads on my street motor, they pick the car up .3 ET and 4 MPH with no other changes over a set well massage big valve 906 heads The Eddy heads flowed 284 CFM at .600 at 28 inches on a Super Flow 600 bench before porting and Jeff made them flow 318 CFM on his bench at .600

Thanks guys!

I sent Jeff an email. Any ideas on getting the black stains off of my headers?

Try some regular cleaning solvent and then drive it. It should/ will burn off after awhile, if I'm remembering correctly. maybe someone else has a better solution. BTW, I had Jeff do a set of B1-BS heads CNC job from 440 port size to M.W. port size, they flowed 284 at .600 bfore and 350 CFM at .600 after on the same Super Flow 600 bench

A non abrasive aluminum wheel polish will take it right off. I have tti's as well and this is what I did to get rid of my oil stain. Makes them look brand new.
