What would you guys recomend,,,brand, part number,,,etc,,,for a harmonic balancer...
this is for a wedge motor, strip car,,,,

(i think i might have "jacked" up my old one,,,trying to take it off),,,ended up pulling one of the bolts,,and likely stripped it a bit,,,,
Still cant get the ^&*()(_*& off......

i have the correct puller device to remove it,,,but the bolts that thread into it came flying off when i started trying to remove the dampr.....arrgghhhhh.

Any other "tricks" to getting the old one off ??

Would throwing some HEAT to it,,,hurt anything ?

Just pulled mine today. Super tight also. Heat on the hub of the dampener should help. I used a heat gun and it takes a lot of heat.

The "trick" I always use is a rattle gun on the puller, put some tension on it, then whack the end of the puller shaft with a hammer (bmfh). The shock will usually overcome the static friction to give you a little movement.

Repeat as needed.

I didn't check the new Fluidamper or crank for the interferance fit before I assembled. Should have. When I mic'd it today I found there's over .003 press fit. That's too much.

Some guys dont like the fluidampr, I have a couple
of them on my SB stuff but I use a ATI damper on my
W-9. Use a puller with 3 grade 8 bolts and a impact,
if it loads up really hard, stop and smack the end of
the big bolt with a BFH for the added shock

I like ATI. Know some pretty good engine builders that don't care for the fluidamprs. I guess I'd say look at the guys who build for endurance (nascar, etc). Most of them are running ATI.

It may be to late for you now but a little anti sieze on the crankshaft and inside the hub will probally help next time

I had such a problem getting my FDampner on, that I sanded the inside and reduced the interference fit. Should make mine come off with reasonable force...will see soon.

As posted before: With tension on the puller give it a whack with the multi-angle swing press.

I would simply drill out the holes and make them 3 eights thread, then remove with impact.Or just put a helicoil in the stripped one.

Cab, I used the Permatex anti sieze on mine when I put it on. Maybe there's a better brand out there.

Any new dampener should be checked for correct fit (I didn't ) before installing, especially with an aftermarket crank. There's no gaurantee the crank snout OD and hub dampener ID will provide the right amount of press fit. I have the recommended numbers in my shop and I'll look it up today when I have a minute.

Also, you can get pullers that use more than 3 bolts. Mine uses 4.

I have an ATI and a Fluidamper, no problems with either one. I like the looks of the ATI better, lol.

They have to be honed to fit! Putting them on right out of the box will guarantee problems when it comes time to remove it. They should fit no tighter than a factory balancer. CHIP

I used the ATI 917470E on two engines. It was not necessary to hone, and I have removed one of them without any problem.
As said above, I like to use a little anti seise when installing.

The 917470E has a steel hub, it may need to be honed

What do you guys think of this ? (it is a 917122E),,,would this work ?

it says "steel",,,,
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/se...rchTerm=917122E

Listed as aluminum shell. It is a steel hub.

The 122 will not line up with the stock pulleys

Definitely hone the new one and use antiseize, I learned that the hard way a few years ago and destroyed a good balancer.
Last year I had one slightly too tight and nothing worked, I borrowed a guy's homemade tool and it came right off, here's a pic....

This is what the tool pushes on, by the way the steel plate on the tool is one inch thick!

I only know about the 917470E as I think it is the only one that is very close to stock for pulley location, and that is what I wanted. I think that 122 will fit the stock timing cover, but will move the pulley mounting surface out about 3/8" but would have someone that knows for sure validate that. If for you that is just moving the the pick-up and alternator, that is probably not to big of a deal

The box said aluminum as does this Summit listing!

Edit Ok I see it is steel hub and Alum. shell. I have used two of them and did not need to hone them though.

This is what is listed in the description...looks like the hub is steel........

Quote:

Aluminum shell/steel hub, 2-ring

It sounds like most people like the ATI over the fluidampr ?????
