Being one of the new SS/AH guys this past year my approach to this class was to run a half second under the index. I might have the $ but I didn't have the time at this point in my career to race as often as it takes to be near the top. It was never my plan to be the man. I was just going to be happy to run a bit behind the best.
Figured if I was going to make this kind of investment I'd start out with the best body from CA, then had FJ Smith build the chassis/cage. Have a $10K paint job, an old crossram MacCallum/Pancake/to Barton's for freshening/Bales/Crosswhite $20K motor that I had to add an oil pump and new set of carbs from CW, who I respect as a no BS, just get it done type of guy. Wired, upholstered, plumbed the car myself. Bought an old ProTrans, added some basic electronics, No RacePak stuff and went racing.
My 1st Hemi Shootout was the CC event at Norwalk. Pulled my F350 and smaller tag trailer into the pits next to Gary W. and David B. Both nice guys who came over and introduced themselves. Serious about their stuff. Spoke to Jim about his old motor...he said it was a good piece but old tech. Both Jim and the Holts were great. Imagine my surprise when I beat Gary and Pancake beat David. Picture this, here I am 9pm Saturday night racing in the Hemi finals at Norwalk, against the former national record holding car and driver. The stuff dreams are made of. Great payday even for a runner-up.
2nd Hemi Shootout was at the Dutch. More cars this time. Pitted next to my friends the Howes Family, and on the other side the Hards, both Brian and Tyler stopped over to take a look at the car and introduce themselves. Their rig provided lots of shade for me, when the sun did shine. I did a fine job securing the final qualifing spot and raced on elimination day. The old motor wasn't the fastest but it held together. Everyone that stopped by had only the best things to say, nothing negative unless it had to do with rain. On Saturday I was told to report to tech, when I got there they wanted me to bring the car down so they could take pictures handing me the "Best Engineered Car" award. Another proud moment for me.
Yes it is worth it. Being at the right place at the right time has alot to do with it. I have had a chance to meet and talk with some great racers the Howes, Marvel, Comella, Barton, Pancake, Wolkwitzes, Hebert, Bales, Joe Jr., Jeff, and CW.
We'll be out soon with radials, a new piston/cam/intake combo and hope to run a half under the new index. No illusions here. I'm sure there a few more new cars on the way, not all of can start with the latest Barton or CW steam, but give us a chance. That's my 2 cents, been there, done it, and will continue to do it.

I raced in all three of the .90 classes, built a stocker that I has success in, but I always wanted a Hemi and to run in superstock. I bought a 68 Barracuda out of Ca. and had it shipped to Minnesota. I did alot of the grunt work myself but had many people offer good advice and direction. Dave Stevens Race Cars did the chassis work and Brian at Paintworks did the paint, (Best appearing at last year Joliet Natl's) John Holt helped with some steering stuff, Mike at MPR did the rearend, offset master cylinder, (really cool), all the Mark Williams brakes and axles. Barton helped with rockers, radiator and intake after the one I had was stolen. Charlie for his help and oil pump. Joel's On Joy for the ProTrans. Bruce and Kenny at Total Engine Service for a very reliable Hemi, Tom Bachman at Goodyear and many others. My goal was to win rounds and run in the 9.20 range, which at the time was .50 under the index. Since the index change and the extra .15 we got last fall, the index is now 9.30. So with bad air, like in Topeka this year, it has become more of a challenge. I went to Indy last year and was the slowest Hemi there, but it was one of the most enjoyable races I have been to. All the other Hemi racers were great and the event will be something I will always remember. Not everyone has the $$$ it takes to win a shootout, but I can appreciate the effort and desire it takes. It is easy to sit on the computer or sidelines and criticize racers for what they consider a poor performance, all I can say is try it and see how you can do. "Dyno" Dan Zrust, Gold Coast Hemi.

Welcome and very impressive ET vs budget. My project came about due to saftey reasons. I was be-bopin around down here bracket racing Jim Pancake's old Death Wish Cuda with a 1000 HP Indy 572, 8.80's 155 MPH on leaf springs. Car had not been updated in 20 years. It got back to Jane that it got a little loose one night so it got parked. "If you have to race, get the latest in saftey." Briar Rabbit!!!! As I see saftey features on the other cars, I upgrade. Holt will not do any car without a fire system. Master cutoff inside driver compartment (saw on Supercuda), pinned freeze plugs (Brooks and Bob Read). All that and ironically Impact belts are now coming out.

Hmmm I bet you could take a class on welding at a comunity college buy a welder some pipe and have your roller befor you could get one you ordered. How much would that be? You don't need to paint anymore since you can buy wraps. If they arnt cnc heads or intake they're pretty cheap compaired to the new stuff and it's not that far off.. It dont take 300,000 to build these cars!!! It takes that much to have one built for you. Take some time to learn how to weld yourself!! It will save you a house!!! These cars would be less the 30,000 if you did it yourself.
Even doing one by yourself you could not even buy the parts for that money. And if you could your performance level would be so far off you might as well stayed home. I have somewhat added that up at one time and your not even close. Sorry.
