FINDINGS: Zooming in down below 100Hz and increasing the FFT integration size you can clearly see the 1st harmonics in exhaust noise. Top RPM was about 4800 in each of the three gears. Second gear might be slightly higher (4830RPM) and Third gear (at the finish line) a little lower (4770RPM). Many higher-order harmonics can also be seen and carry additional useful information. (These are all conservative guesses on the low side and could be higher by 20 or 30 RPM.)

I never thought I'd see a thread on FFT on Moparts. Since the exhaust cycle only happens every other revolution on a 4-cycle engine (they are running Hemis as 4-cycles still, aren't they?), I guess you can double those numbers to come up with engine RPM.

$100 for 100 HP. Someone's dreaming of a BIG Christmas present. Closer to $100k for 100 HP and that would still be cheap at that level.

He's doing very well in retirement....finally! I didn't think he was ever going to stop working 7 days a week.

At the moment, I'd classify our racing plans as up in the air. The two WCH Cudas are no longer at our shop which leaves the Belvedere and my Mom's Volare. I know my Mom plans on doing some racing next year and we have an engine together for the Belvedere, but I don't know if it will see a track again under our ownership. Ideally, we would like to sell it.

Did Ogbern get out at all this year? I did not see his cars in any results.

NHRA lowered all indexes by .30 in Stock & Super Stock.

Yes, but now the trigger has also been revised, allowing the Record to be reset as low as 8.05 without triggering an index or HP adjustment by NHRA.

2010 should be interesting!
Westcott powered cars run ET's that are comparable to Charlie and his Dads times. I'm sure his customers like that.
Always a bunch of "Jackson Engine Tech" motors in the top half of the field.
While there may be 0.40 difference between Barton motors.

Mike, you must be reading somone's mind. If he has one!!!

Isn't this the same argument people made when Nickens ruled comp eliminator for so many years, I think Nickens put his own engine in other cars just to quiet the rumors. At any rate, Congratulations to Barton for their success and it's interesting to watch the march towards the 7's, never thought that would happen.
Happy Holidays Everyone!
Joey

I was at nickens when this happened David sold the engine out of his b/a along with his spare the guy who bought it on the 1st or 2nd run went heaps under the index making it real hard from there on.If you offer enough you can buy pretty much anything if it's not a "pro class"These guys are running buissness to make cash and they are always developing new stuff to go faster.

Hello.....anybody here?

Funny you should ask.

I took the audio from the Daniels run and had one of my Scientists look into this for a few minutes. He ran the audio through a Sonar tool (Jonesie' tracking Red October) we have and did a Spectrogram plot (do not know how to attach). Need another Scientist. Ha! The red lines are the engine harmonics which are directly related to shaft rate and engine RPM. The gear shifting is clearly visible and lines up with what is heard in the video.

CAVEAT: We are basing this analysis on indirect observation from acoustic energy in the exhaust noises (good thing they don't use mufflers). These were eyeball measurements coupled with FFT length constraints so frequency estimates maybe .5Hz precision. That creates an uncertainty of 30RPM or so. So the top RPM might be 20 or 30 Hz higher. Also there is a curious non-linearity in that harmonics are not exact multiples of each other and varies with frequency. (Note how the harmonic slopes get steeper as freq goes up. We need to investigate this further to interpret these harmonics and get a more accurate estimate of RPM.)

If we need greater precision (reducing uncertainty etc) then we'll need to extract these signals and perform more elaborate analysis.

The program does not care that the engine is a four stroke so for a slight fee I will multiply the findings by two.

PS Thanks to Al Gore for the internet and my friend Jim D. for the noise. Now let's see if the board is working.

I now have the converter and powerband mapped but do not think I should post that data. This is all in fun. The Barton's have "their stuff in one sock"..... GO SAINTS!!!

good one....

im an audio guy.......and i even said to myself .....[Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean]??
