Hey guys, little help here.... I am building a 446, and I want to keep my 71 steel crank and rods. Any suggestions on a piston, head, cam combo that will get me 525-550 hp. Wanna be able to do mostly street and occasional strip runs. Want the best combo to achieve this.... 73 Cuda with 4 speed and 3.91 gear Thanks in advance GG Plus I heard the engine guru's hung here! LOL

I have a 446ci Jensen made for street/strip, I went with a 270 Comp cam, milled and ported heads with valve bowl work, 9.35 to 1 compression, two Edelbrock 500 carbs and Delta Motorsports headers. I have a feeling I'll be more like 400hp than 500hp though...
To be honest in your situation I would look at a 4.15 stroker crank...?

Naw, somebody is lying to you, none of the engine gurus on here, myself included, are hung Not that any of the girls are telling about anyways Now, to the moe seriuos matters on how to make HP with a 446, start with a new set of good aluminum heads like the Eddy RPM heads, a set of forged lightweight aftermarket flat top piston with valve releifs(not a heavy set of Speed Pro or TRW six pak or flat top forged pistons) and a camshaft type(solid or hydraulic, roller lifters or flat type lifters, depending on your budget restraints) that you want. I like Comp Cams brand and use them almost exclusivily now in my engines with your car, trans and gear ratio I would (with headers) probally use the XE-HL grinds, either the XE285HL or the XE295HL hydraulic lifter grinds or a XS290S soild lifter cam. If you want a rollere cam then you will have to make a decision on the type of roller lifter, solid or hydraulic and type of grind on the solid foller cam, street and strip or race cam. Race cams not recommended by me for street and strip use, they are to hard on parts for the average street strip racers BTW, are you going to use a six pak set up on the car ? I do IHTHs.

I agree with Cab, just basic stuff, good machining and assembly with get you there. I'm doing the same build right now: 040" over 440, Wiseco (light) flat tops, stock stroke, etc. Cam to be determined based on what it goes in, but no more than 260-ish either roller or solid. CR will be at least 11:1 with some form of OEM type aluminum head; either MP, Eddy or 440source. Holley SD or M1 and 850-950-ish of carb. Should fall right into your range of 525-550...although I want TORQUE, too...hopefully in the 575 ft lbs area!!

Any time you want to rev the motor higher than 4500 RPM you should have a decent set of adjustable rockers and good push rods to match the rocker adjuster sizes, the other thing is when you deck the block and add aftermarket cylinder heads or cut the heads to blueprint them you will need a adjsutable rocker arm or adjustable pushrods to set the preload or valve lash on the Hi Po cams being used today Buy the best parts you can get for the application, cheap parts can kill you

What rockers and push rods do you recommend?

A good set of ductile iron rockers for the flat tappet cams(soild and hydraulic tappet) and a good set(Harland,Sharp,T&D,or Jesel) aluminum roller rockers for the solid roller lifter cams. As far as pushrods either Smith Bros or Mantons(the best ) in the proper thickness for the valve spring pressures and RPM

CarCraft did a nice buildup article on a 540-hp / 580-tq 440 a few years back. Great easy to build (and live with) street stump puller. Also, note the similarities and common theme. This combo uses many of the same basic parts and advice others have already recommended to you in this post. If it were my build, I definitely would use a solid lifter cam for the increase RPM capability. You are halfway there with adjustable rocker gear...why not take further advantage of the capabilities of a solid cam also? Why risk the BS of valve instability and float with a Hydraulic cam. Comp's MH, FL and SQ lobes are excellent and will live a long and happy life with a mopar .904 lifter. Something comparable to the XE275HL in a solid would be FL272/FL276 lobes. 243/247 @050 CarCraft build: RPM intake (stock) RPM heads (stock) Comp XE275HL cam 231/237 @.050 1.6 roller rockers 1" 4-hole spacer 750 Demon Speedpro 2355f flattop sixpack pistons, 10.2 compression LY rods factory forged crank 2" headers http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/116_0205_mopar_440_update/index.html

Here's what I'm building which is a duplicate of a combo we ran years ago and I'm recycling some of the parts from that engine....
440 +.030 using flat top slugs- 9.7 compression 452 heads that have been ported and using the larger valves steel crank and rods Mopar 296/557 cam 750 Holley Edelbrock TM-7 2" headers. When the funds allow it,I will switch to Edelbrock heads.
It went 11.30's in a 71 Demon with a race converter and too much gear.I think 383 man has basically the same engine in a 63 Plymouth and his runs very well too.
Nautilus Racing- We use Superformance gaskets and Turbo Action converters/products.

Will I need to use adj rockers if I deck the block to get the proper quench???? And, yes I am using a xe285-295hl cam(hyd flat tappet).
Most definitly!!

Yes my combo is almost the same in my 63 but I use 906 heads and the Holley Street Dominator intake. 850 DP and Hedman 1-3/4 headers. 11.52 is my best but I ran 11.50's the last 2 times out in the heat so I am hoping for 11.40's in the cooler air soon. I also use Isky ductile iron adjustable rockers that have worked fine. I like this simple combo as its a stock bottom end 440 with factory heads but at .030 it has 446 cubes. So it shows you can run mid 11's in a 3700 lb car with a basically stock eng internally other then a mild cam and pistons at the factory rating of 10.0 comp. Ron
