Seems I've heard something about using a special antifreeze or using some kind of additive with your antifreeze to fight corrosion of aluminum parts in your cooling system mainly the radiator.

Is there something special to use, or am I OK with regular antifreeze? Just installed a new aluminum radiator and I want it to last.

Thanks,
Scott

I installed an aftermarket aluminum radiator two years ago and used regular antifreeze. Last week when I drained it out and looked down the side tank it all looked perfectly clean inside from what I could see.

What about a rad cap with a built in sacrificial anode?
Cheap, and takes a little worry out of the whole situation IMO...?

Modern green (and any color) antifreeze has properties to handle aluminum. Since you are adding a lot of fresh surface area you might want to add a supplemental coolant additive like Justice Brothers Radiator protectant. Just extra precaution.

name brand good ole green, distilled water & a sacrificial anode screwed into an unused cooling port (they're cheap) plus you'll need it when you spring for some aluminum heads

50/50 mix of G05 and distilled water works great in aluminum rads.

I tried that crap, seeped out of the head gaskets and water pump housing... no thanks. Went with the green stuff and was much happier.

That had nothing to do with the antifreeze. Time to do some maintenance on your "crap" cooling system. It's what ma Mopar uses and recommends.

Funny, all the problems went away when I swapped.

Radiator cap with sacrificial anode

that cap uses magnesium. The ones that screw into a cooling port were zinc. Will magnesium work just as good?
