Has anybody tried using a product called Armaflex to insulate the inside of their car? It is used in the HVAC industry as pipe insulation. It can be bought in sheets from 1/4" to 1" thick. It is glued with contact cement. It is a closed cell rubber product. The price is low, especially compared to some of these other products like Dynamat or others. Just wondered if anyone could say it's good or bad for this use.

I was just at Lowes looking at insulation for HVAC, was going to use it for headliner, floor and firewall. Came in rolls 16" wide I think, 1/4" thick and adhesive on the back for $15. R value was only 3, but I thought it would be good enough and help deaden some road noise and rattles.

This stuff is as cheap but far denser and it is closed cell. Easy to work with. I have seen the stuff at the Home Centers too but this will work way better. Thanks for the reply.

Yes, been using it since the 60s. You can see it in the trunk of my coupe. It is designed for refrigeration but is also used as a sound deadener on pipes and air ducts.

You can purchase it at any insulation company or insulation distributor. We use Armstrong 520 glue to nail it down. If you know a pipe insulator they are pretty good at this (30 years). When I get back home I'll be doing the interior floorboards too.

Started on the armaflex interior today. I've only been out of the field for a year and already I'm rusty. Started with the harder areas like the tunnel. 1/2 inch thick armaflex and 520 glue. A very sharp knife.

Then tackled the firewall. Lots of little pieces here, take your time.

Of course everything went perfect until I went to mount the console. The thickness of the insulation would not let the mounts line up anymore. So I drew a chalk line along the console and trimmed the insulation along the line, glued the carpet back, and remounted the console. Okay one or two bad words might have slipped out.

Hooked up the gauges and mounted the dash. Next I need to insulate between the trunk bulkhead and interior rear wall.

This is where your age starts to show up a bit. I am sore today from reaching through that access hole all day.

I still have a little more to do in there, but if you want it done right, you have to hire a real insulator. It's pretty easy to find one that will work for food and beer.
