Okay,i am constantly updating my 64 Dart race car ,and i recently moved the Battery to the trunk.Im running a 1 wire alt ,with a master cutoff in the rear.I ran the alt wire to the battery side of the disconnect and all was well and charging as usual. The other day i pulled the gauge cluster and key and went to a start button and ignition switch.I also changed the steering wheel for another and disconnected the horn. Now when i turn the power on ,i can hear the relay on the firewall ticking and the alt is not charging ,or the ignition wont run with the positive battery disconnected anyway.Whats wrong and why is the relay making noise? Im lost now .The car has the factory wiring harness and it is in usable condition. Here is what i did on the starter button conversion.I ran the battery wire from the key switch and the yellow wire labeled start to a button switch. The wires for ign.1 and ign.2 i ran together from an independent battery source to a toggle. The wires for accessery i disconnected. The car starts and runs fine ,and the lights ,dome light ,etc ,still work fine ,its just not charging now .Any help would be appreciated ,thanks...

Yes, i connected them .The car had no elec .power until i connected them. Was i not suppose to splice them together directly ?If im not mistaken , if the 1 wire alt. main wire is hooked directly from the alt. to the battery side of the master cutoff ,it should charge regardless of anything else in the system ,shouldnt it?

Is the relay clicking the horn relay? If so are you still using or wanting the horn to work? If not remove rthe relay, the wire from the horn button provides ground to the horn relay, not battery to the relay. It's probally grounded somewhere now making the relay activate As far as not charging are you referring to a amp meter reading now or are you using a volt meter to see if the volts go up at the battery when the car is running now?

Im not using a gauge since its a drag only deal ,i just cant make it run now with the battery cable removed and the alt. lead wire still attached to the cutoff.Im assuming its not charging.I dont have a multimeter handy to check it ,but it seems like it would run off the alt if it was charging.Am i right or wrong on this ( im no auto electrical expert )?I will just disconnect the horn relay as you said ,since its prbably grounding as you say,and im not using a horn anyway now. Thanks for the help also,i appreciate it ...

If the alternator is not recieving voltage from the battery it cannot make voltage, alternators do not make amperage or voltge, they can only increase it It sounds like you have the alternator hooked up correctly so the motor dies when the cut off switch or one of the battery cables is disconnected you need to buy, borrow or swipe a volt meter and check the battery voltage before and after starting and keeping the motor running. You might want to use a volt meter in the car also to make sure that the charging system is working, make sure the volt meter is not active with the ignition run switch(toggle) in the off position
