Fred, did you run in one of the right two lanes, or the left? It looked like the right two lanes weren't prepped as well during the four lane races during the national event.

As far as the PG, I've been trying to get Fred to paint the Hemi blue like Jake did, but without success. Maybe engine paint doesn't stick to aluminum well?

sorry to disappoint you but there's no way I would race the car with a 4 speed today. The car is 35 years old it's chassis could not take the hammering it gives. The p/g does not stress the chassis very much so that's why it is used. So bottom line is a race with a P/G or get retired to a new life as a show poodle. personally I think we have more than a fair share of these cars living that life.

Is Bob Reed ok?? Did he have his 68??
Is the car ok?

WOW thats unbelieveble ?? We ran up there first of the year and the track was awesome??? I'm guessing all the rain we've had may have washed the rubber off the track now why they did not reprep the track is unknown (may have something to do with the fact the track manager had no idea they were running untill about 10 days before this all took place.. I hate it for Bob that was a beautiful car glad to hear he's allrigh

Very sorry to hear about The Silver Bullet crashing but glad Bob is OK. Cars can be rebuilt. Thankfully, Fred, his Duster and the Jenkins car did not end up the same way.

I understand what you're saying but why is it that people will still get on a track like that with a fast car? I watched a kid do that with a 7sec small tired mustang and now he's in a wheelchair. If the track sucks, don't unload it.

Dave, you would know, and I stand corrected. But, I have an old home movie that I took of the Sox Duster at Englishtown in 73(or maybe in 74?) and Dave Christie was adjusting the Lenco with a fish scale....I guess measuring the tension on each lever. I think it was 73 when your dad broke a wheelie bar on the burnout in the final...it was removed and your dad performed what I think is the most memorable wheelstand I've ever seen.

That is a super bummer regarding Bob's accident. I'm grateful he's OK, and he's back in the saddle real quick.

Sorry to hear about Bob Reed crashing like that. What a terrible waste. Funny thing about the ford blue engine paint, I was stripping hemi orange from a set of 65 A990 "K" heads and what a surprise, I found left overs of ford blue paint on them. I will always have to think that they came from the Sox & Martin camp. Good Times!

Probably the second Duster you saw that is now in the Mosley collection. Herb's wheelstand was '72.

Correct on the wheelstand.

I'm not saying the car never had Lenco in it, but it was originally built with a 4 spd.

I hate that Bob wrecked his car. Except for track prep when a national event is there [and NHRA does the work], I have consistently heard very bad feedback about track prep at zMax.

Doug, you are right, it was '72. Jenkins had that all conquering, illegal as heck Vega that had everyone covered.

I remember it broke on the burnout, and Ronnie, Buddy, and the rest ran up and removed the bar from the other side. Herb must have known what was going to happen.....and it did. He put on the best show I've ever seen, bar none!!

The four speeds were long gone by the time the Duster was built....everyone was running a Lenco.

The 70 Cuda was probably the last crash box four speed Ronnie drove, although there may have been one in the cars briefly in 1971.

A clutch would tear the car to pieces today. I'd much rather have it be preserved and raced.

Although we've gone round and round with Fred on this when Bob was building the engine (I'd love to see a torqueflite), in reality a PG is probably the only real option.

Go get'em Fred. Keep us posted.

The car was originally built with an 833 4 spd just like Herb's Demon. Not sure if the Duster ever had Lenco in it [while it was still owned by S&M].

i saw ronnie race it back in 73 at national speedway, it had a hemi 4 speed in it.
its a crying shame it ended up with a stinkin' powerglide in it.

after know'in its a powerglide in it, the value of that car has significantly declined.think its hogwash that the car couldn't handle a 4 speed.what a waste. a 2 speed in a sox and martin car.who's idea was that??????

put 4 speed in it and drive it like it was supposed to be driven.it only makes solo passes anyway.
