i am trying to get my hemi to the dyno. it came in a crate from calif. i have not had to uncrate it until now. there are no good points to get it on a engine hoist, bolt holes are mighty small looking for the weight. anybody have any methods? i have tryed to find a dual plate for the carbs and none to be found, only costly custom made ones. thanks for any help!

Mike,

I just lifted my hemi using the bolt holes in the heads closest to the intake manifold diagionally across from each other. I think they are 3/8" bolts.

these bolt holes look smaller, they are mopar crate heads i believe. make a difference? i also have the trans also hooked up to put on the k frame.

I would check the bolt size and see if there is any evidence of how it was lifted previously. The trans should add about 150 lbs. and change the center of gravity.
I would also be leary of lifting with the trans on.
Possibly other more commercially aligned members have more experience with this.

I would agree.
But it will definately add weight and change the certer of gravity.
My lift was the engine only and it worked fine using the existing holes in the heads.

You said your taking it to the dyno ?
Why would you attach the trans ??
If your trying to transport it to the
dyno then set the engine in a tire or
mount it to a cart with casters.

Mine came with and I used the single 4 bbl lifting plate on the intake....Works fine. You can also use the holes on the ends of the heads.

Take care,

Yes to get it out use the corner end head bolt holes or use a lifting plate.

A peice of chain and 2 bolts is all you need.

Why is this in the resto board?

What type of 2 x 4 intake ? If in line, possibly two individual lift plates will work. If crossram, no way would I use two lift plates, if the crossram is a new design. I used a leveler and the four chains attached to the leveler and the other ends of the chains to the front and back of each MP Aluminum Head. No problem in lifting it. If you are using a Lakewood style of adjustable engine hoist, make sure that you extend the two bottom legs of the hoist out as far as possible. This is what it should look like after installed in the car.

Good Luck...

I used the bolt holes in the head with a piece of chain.

I make these engine lift plates for big blocks. I could make them Hemis also, just haven't ever done it. The plates bolt to the exhaust side of the heads and give you a very secure place to attach a chain.

Those are pretty sweet, but I had a manifold get bound up on a stud once and the whole water jacket and casting broke out of a perfectly good head. There wasn't that much pressure on it when it broke.I was sliding it off the studs by hand.
So after my experiance i almost cringe at the thought of your big block hanging by the exhaust studs going into a thin water jacket.
Nice job on the brackets though

16 ft gantry hoist, chain cross on heads.

try making a 2x10 type moving stand. credit to " hughes engine hauler" .

Edelbrock heads have dry holes for exhaust. no leaks! but, you're right, stock heads would have 1 bolt into a water jacket with that hoist. the other 2 however, are not into water, and the 6 together should be more than enough to hold the 600lbs of a complete motor. how many of us have lifted engines by the 4 1/2 holes on the ALUMINUM intake manifold?
