I am using the wix 51515 oil filter. I notice the check valve on the filter inlet holes appears to be pushed back after in service awhile. After this happens I believe all the oil drains back into the oil pan after the engine sits awhile allowing air into the filter and oil galleys. I am having intermittent noise problems with hydraulic lifters (pumping air into lifters?) and wandered if this could be the source of the problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there any other brand of filter that doesn't experience this problem?

Thanks,

Roger

Even OEM they would at times do this. It is worse with heavy spring pressures.Back in the day GM (at least in our area) was noted for this. Have yet to see where it hurt anything.

It doesn't seem to be damaging anything that I can tell. I am having intermittent lifter noise. I am thinking air may be getting introduced into the lifters. It had a comp cams hydraulic flat tappet and I got tired of the lifter noise and changed it to a sig erson roller with scorpion hydraulic lifters. I am still having the same intermittent lifter noise. On a cold start up the lifters may or may not rattle (it usually seems to be one lifter at a time). After warm up the noise will go away. Last week I ran it at the track with the exhaust open and didn't notice any problem. Engine ran great and never missed a beat. Capped the headers and started the engine for the drive home and could hear a very loud lifter. After a short distance the noise quit and it is running ok now. Sure would like to stop the noise though.

Try switching filters. I have been using Mobile 1 #M1-204 with success. Recommended by lots of people on this sight. I really don't think thats your problem though. It should take but a few minutes for any air in the oiling system to be pushed out after start up.
