With the body work, sealer. base and clear coat mine was right at about 50 lbs(might have been 55) I would think a normal size car would be closer to 75-80 per paint job... the most I ever put on was 2 paint jobs then strip it.... I've painted mine 5 times now

Water actually weighs 8.38 lbs per gallon, not 7, and a gallon of paint is considerably heavier. Last time I stripped and repainted my race car, it lost 60 lbs from the former excess paint and body filler.

Just remember that some of that paint goes in the air. Primer gets sanded off as does filler, unless your one of those guys that like to put filler in a 1/4 inch or more. A car with 5 paint jobs over each other? After 2 I would strip it down to metal. If you have 60 lbs of paint and filler on your car then your useing to much filler. I understand putting a couple gallons of filler on to skim coat the car, but about a gallon plus will come off sanding. Unless your running a Pro class, I wouldn't make a big deal over the weight of paint.

Pretty heavy. I just picked up the paint supplies for my race car.. 2 gallons of primer fill, probably half of this will get sanded back off or more. So -1/2-1 gallon of primer -1 gallon of sealer -2gallons of thinner i dont know if this would add to total weight -1 1/2 gallon of base coat -1 1/4 gallon of clear coat - 1/2 gallon of base maker?? several small pints and quarts of hardner, activators and misc other things
It was heavy, 3 boxes of stuff, two were pretty heavy, and the last had a few small thing in it plus some strainers, and sticks.
I would say a easy 50 lbs.
Bondo which my car doesnt have much of would be the thing that would add a bunch of weight fast. A old rusty car would have a easy 1/2 gallon in each 1/4 panel.. We all have owned these mud filled dream boats LOL

X2, Much of what u put on the car during the paint job dosen't stay on the car, allot of material is wasted

Right on, I realize what goes on and what comes off, evaporates etc., We were just curious what 5 actual jobs on top of each other might weigh???? anyone autually weigh before an after a job, If Mr P Body has a car that weighed 50lbs heavier after painting, than budy has close to 200 lbs of weight in primer. paint and clear wow.. Jim...

I dont think it would weigh that much going over old paint... your not doing the whole process... some sanding, sealer, paint and maybe clear... I did some body work, primer, sealer, 2 coats of color and 3 clear... normally I would have sanded some of the clear off but I never got around to it(and its pretty thick with clear)

I think Hot Rod magazine did a comparision on a project car,1948 Anglia with a Chevy V6?, that they weighed the car before and after as wells the paint, primer and so on. You have to remember that a lot of the liquids in the paint and primers evaporates into the atomsphere, it does not weigh the same on the car as it did in the cans. I think that car was a lot like a show car and got several coats of paint, 5 or 6, and two or more coats of clear, 8 or more coats total. The car weighed under 50 lbs more after all the paint and body work, those cars are small so maybe it is not relative to our size cars

Their are many thing to consider here, how the work was done. Many peoples paint n body work varies, I think if its just a matter of applying some paint, like a redo, you would gain about 20lbs, compared to original job, which probly was allot more

Depends on the paint job i woudl say. Some cars have one or two total coats(single stage vs BC/CC)others have mutilple layers of paint on them. For example my heap is white underneath everything. The orange paint on the front is so translucent that it takes a number of coats before you get to the color of the finished product. I would say it varies from 35lbs to in excess of 70lbs, just depends on the paint job.
