Why do you feel that you need a high pressure pump. Very feew applications need one.

All of the faster NHRA stock class racers I know (severl NHRA record holders ) use the standard off the shelf 318 pumps, not the high pressure, not the high performance or high volume pumps for the 340 and 360

not many choices for an oil pump on the small blocks. i use a melling hv pump, figure its better to have to much oil than not enough.

Went with a high pressure / volume pump ( think it was a melling ) in my last 408 build. Mistake that I'm sure is costing me some HP.

from my experience the newer pumps are junk.
the older ones are good. the newer ones are made with junk parts.
I will not run another new one after doing some research with new and old ones.

Well call me crazy, but I use the Melling HV and I open it up and round off some passage, enlarge the exit, ...generally use my head to improve flow. I also replace the spring for a higher pressure relief one.

I'm sure I'm wasting HP, but my engine is still together and doing just fine. Deeper pan, and I've never run out of oil due to the extra volume pump.

45psi hot at idle .....75psi top end WOT. 1000's and 1000's of street miles, and 100's of WOT runs.

Whatever you do,do not run a high volume pump with a stock pan. That cost me a 340 bottom end.At high rpm you can drain a stock pans volume quickly. The high pressure relief spring is for engines trhat have large journal clearances, fully grooved bearings or some other reason requiring pressure compensation.
I have a tubed block, solid lifters,2.5thou on the mains, fully grooved bearings and with the high volume mellings and the MP HP spring have cold idle oil pressure at 75psi,warm 55/60..probably a little high .They say on a smallblock that you need 10psi for every 1000 rpm hot.

Thanks! Hey guy's, there is a long story that can explain my question and why I feel I need a hi-pressure pump. Normally, I do use a stock oil pump (even in my RR), sometimes I'll use a HV pump in customers cars and what not. Here I feel I need a HP pump, like I said, long story.

Same pressures I'm getting. 8 Qt Milodon pan, so I'm not running out of oil - still got big pressure in the lights. Just thought the pressures were a little excessive for my needs.

I am running a stock Melling pump on my 416 that I took apart and cleaned up the casting a little it holds 45# at hot idle and crosses the line at close to 80# hot I had a HV in it at first and it was pushing 95# hot so I pulled it out and these pressures where verified with 2 different gauges.

Titan Speed makes a billet alluminum pump that you can crank stupid pressure and stupid volume if you desire. I had an oil pump break in the main body one time and decided I needed this pump. The rotor is about 1 1/2 times longer than the HV 72. It also uses a different shape rotor(like a ford). This pump requires some pan work also. The pump was just way to much volume for me and when you regulated it down to 80 psi, which it will hold at a hot idle, it was just burning up HP. I now use an external pump from SCP.

My HV72 pumps right out of the box would make 85 psi through the traps and 55 idling hot. I did run a roller cam, oiled through the pushrods, and ran a needle bearing cam bearing. Probably could have easily gotten away with a stock pump.

Dave I believe it is Precision who takes a Melling and blueprints it. I just followed Ryan J's directions and did mine and very similar to what Larry Lar414 did, I also opened up the main cap to match. You doing this on a 474 W9 by chance ??
