went to a junk yard today, found a couple 440's for my road runner. i was wondering, do the motor home 440's come with a steel crank from the factory? the ones i was looking at both had electronic ignition so i would assume they were a later 70's model. any idea where i could find specs on them? also, while i was there a i found an early 60's winnebago with a 413 in it. any idea if those are worth anything? it had really tall heads on it, and the water pump was tall as well and it bolted to the heads as well as the front of the block. are those heads worth anything as far as performance?
any help would be great, or if anyone knows where i can find info on these things.

IIRC,the 413 heads are not worth that much for performance

a steel crank will have the thin damper on the crank

a thick bullet nose damper (like mine,79 MH) is a cast crank

cast crank 440 is just as good as a steel crank 440,IMHO

could be some one out there that wants the 413 engine..and the other 440s as well, they dont make them any more and getting few and far between,IMO

I could use one of the flat rubber tranny mounts myself

hmm, i had hoped i found a nice little junkyard jem with that 413, but i guess the odds of max-wedge heads on a motor home are slim to none there were 3 440s 1 413 and a 361 if any washington members want to know where shoot me a pm, but i call dibbs on a 440!

I geuss to the right person it would be a little gem

look at the heads on the 440s also, some are better than other

mine had the 452

some could be the odd one that use the penut plugs

I am not sure on any of it,I am just doing up my first 440 from a MH in an 85 truck

most MH 440s have the front sump pan unless the are the truck/van type RV

mine was a 60 foot winnybaygo 1 1/2 ton chassis,with a short shaft 727 with a 4" u-joint and 1 1/4" round caps...I shouldnt brake that one

good luck

FWIW, some of the MH BB's had 8 bolt cranks too...

i did quite a bit of searching last night, came up with there were industrial grade 413's that have the 8 bolt flange you mentioned, and the flange is longer then normal bb motors. i think it said it was the same steel crank the max wedge motors used but i could not find any info on the heads.

a thick bullet nose damper (like mine,79 MH) is a cast crank

This is the same exact motor I am using in my car. But what is the deal with the bullet nose damper? I just sold a 76 MH 440 that had one also. I was hoping to just bolt this engine in as is for the most part since it runs perfectly.

that damper is for cast crank only

mine has the 727 short shaft that was on it from the rv

not sure if the tc has been weighted or not..have not looked yet

I dont see any thing wrong with any good 440,run what you brung
mine also has the 452 heads which is good also

IMO,shaving 60 foot of motor home off and putting it in a 85 truck with 3.91sg will be a boost for a stock 440 if you ask me
