My heads have been extensively ported and modified. They are now Max Wedge port size and closed chambered. I'm having a valve job done on them right now and will post specs when I get them back.
FWIW, these heads were done before I was born, lol!!!
Just curious... Are you guys still using templates to do the port work that DC & MP used to sell?? Or is there a better way now?? How many hours does it take to do a pair of 906's to the max as far as you can take them??
Templates have you do very little work , they are for stock valve sizes and they don't have you do anything to the short turn which is what makes or breaks the port.

Fully ported aluminum heads with valve job typically takes about 16-18 hours.
16-18 hours?! For fully ported heads? Man, I wish I had your energy.

I typically don't, but when it's your job, you make it happen... lol, 8 hr days standing in one place with a grinder get a little old but at the same time, I like making things go faster! Keep in mind, those 16 to 18 hrs of port work, that's one heads I've done before and know what needs doin'. Heads I've never worked on before, those require some time...

Have them flowed and see how you did. I think the exh port is way too large for starters. Looks mean little tho. The idea is not to make them LARGER but to make them flow air faster and smoother with the right volume. Just big can mean more problems than power.
Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

It is my job. I can see your point on doing the same head for the same job. It helps tremendously in saving testing and development time. But, doing mainly heads for various class racing, I'm always working with different lift ranges, engine sizes, RPM ranges, etc. so I rarely do a set w/o the need for at least, some specific development around an existing combination. I may have 100 hours in a set using a fully CNC'ed set as a starting point.

Nice work. This is the only pic I have of my 906's on my 63. I bet I have about 30 hrs total in them as not only did I do the bowls and ports I enlarged the seats and installed the 2.14 & 1.81 valves myself.
I shoulda read the thread first, you are bang on IMO...
Thanks for the kind words.
I know when I did my own heads I would work on them for a few hrs a night. Then go back to them the next time I had a few hrs to spare as I have a bad back and it kills me to stand like that for long. So this way I would only stand like that about 2 hrs at the most. Ron

Get a stool that you can sit on and make sure you have some sort of rubber mat under your feet. Something so you're not standing on the hard floor all the time. Makes it a little more bearable. I also find that an MP3 player helps me concentrate on the work at hand and drown out background noise.

The problem with these castings is that they aren't consistent. The bottom line is if you try to get a lot out of them, then it's not a matter of IF they will crack, but more like WHEN they will crack. Like the others have stated, if you don't need to run them to comply to a specific class, then I really don't see how it makes sense to take these to a very high level. We are really in the "Golden Age" of aftermarket parts. Why mess with this old junk unless you have to. MB
And I agree..so keep that in mind the whole trick here is make them flow better not to make them bigger..they will crack ..sooner or later
