I have a question on a common subject.
I have checked my pinion angle and I think I am at zero degrees.I am checking the driveshaft and the yoke while the car is on the ground. I get a negetive 2* or just in between 2* and 3* on the gauge. I get the same reading on the driveshaft and the yoke, they both read about 2.5* and it is both on the same side of zero. . they do look very much to be in line together. am I correct in that would be a zero? I have a 4* shim in the car now. I have super stock springs and they are in the upper mount holes.
how much more shim do I need?
I think I can get an 8* shim, or would a six* shim work. I am not sure of the geometry of the shims in relation to how much it moves the yoke.
I want to remove the 4* and only use one shim.
I hope I have explained myself well enough and thanks for the help

Oh...pinion angle question...never fear they will be plenty of answers.
How did you arrive at those numbers you posted...
I assume the proper way to set pinion angle is measure the transmission slip yoke then measure the rear end drive shaft yoke..These are the numbers you want to go by. Make sure the car is level like it would set in the staging lanes or on the line. Its simple math from there. Like +2.5 slip yoke + -4.5 pinion yoke = a -2 pinion angle.
Cause of pinion wrap on a leaf spring car most look for 4-5 deg nose down (- pinion angle). Were a ladder bar car or 4 link moves very little so they can read much closer to zero. Any positive pinion angle is bad.

Really, not a 2x4 that I have ever seen. If you dont have anything positive to add, please move along.

bob, I measured like in this diagram. thats where my numbers came from. you could call it 87.5/87.5 on both I guess it depends how you hold the gauge.

I did another thread search. I see that this is split into two camps.

O.K. I rechecked some things. the yoke on the trans or engine centerline is tilted 2.5* down pointing at the rear. The yoke on the rear of the car is tilted 2.5* up. so they are parralel right now. So I need to shim so I have +/- 3* negative so that under power they return to parallel. right?
by the way the MR Gasket pinion shim I have now is a 4* and measures 3/8" on the fat end. NOT exactly a 2x4.....

Yes you are now parallel. So put that 4* 2x4 shim in there, for a nose down pinion angle.

In your example both camps methods, would work out exactly to the same pinion angle.

It isnt always like that though, witch is why I aways use the Tranny/Pinion centerline method.

The more accurate camp method!! mike

with the shim that thick does the locating pin for the housing need anything?a longer bolt to reach the axle perch or something?

It has the 4* shim in it now. the thick part of the shim is 3/8"
I also noticed I was getting the same numbers both ways. I think I will put a 6* shim in it. they are 5/8" and that should give me enough to make me happy. I have plenty of bolt head poking up now. not a problem.

Not in most cases IMO. I have seen some different height locating pins, but most IMO would be plenty long enough for a 4* shim 3/8 thick on the fat side. As its thickness would be half that at the pin.

But it would be something to check.

But, I say, Go ahead with the 2x4 mike
