im getting to the point where i need to paint a couple things for my 440 that im putting together and ive dealt with spray cans with mostly crappy results and id like to stay away from the higher cost of spray gun paints as well

i saw in the summit catalog POR15 makes a brush on engine paint thats supposed to be very durable and theres a couple other brands too.

anyone use a brush on style paint? if so how did it hold up?

im also looking for a high temp black paint for headers, ive heard about BBQ paint but can only find the stuff up to 1200. at advance auto i found VHT 1500-2000 flameproof paint...anyone use this stuff?

thanks in advance

never had any good results on painting headers..it allways burns off

I use the duplicolor spay bombs after sand blasting the block or degreaseing with oven cleaner, wash it down with brake clean and dry

I used 3-4 cans of paint..hemi orange for the long block myself

the pullys I use the rustolium in brush on,after sand blasting then paint or spray with the HVLP gun..

I also have been painting the frame,under hood,fender wells,inside cab/jambs with the rustolium,turns out good,IMHO

I got a gallon of black,and a can of lacker thinner..less than 50$

just about have done the whole truck for the black out paint

you could use some implement/tractor paint with hardner, that holds up fair on an engine, about 50$ also, thats cheap to spray

I would think the rustolium paint would brush on the engine fairly well and hold up maybe

all shade tree ideas though

I've used the por 15 engne paint. Very nice results. Very dyrable. Big pain in the behind to do. If you have time to spend it's worth the trouble. Dry time is very very slow. Plan on spending 3 to 4 days to paint it and a week before you can install it. Next problem is color., If you have a 68 or early motor they don't have that color. I don't know if they offer Hemi orange either.

the duplicolor had chrysler red and the hemi orange, and the turqouies blue

the rest of 2-3 colors of orange was chivy orange

tractor paint is kubota orange, seen a few mud jeeps that color, didnt look bad to me

I've brush painted engines for 30 years, never had problems like spray bombs.
I use Tremclad in a can for the engine, and Tremclad Barbeque paint for headers and exhaust manifolds, it sticks better than any spray bomb I have ever seen or used....

I've used POR-15 also and agree with the above. You need multi coats to get good coverage. Takes forever too.

I am a big fan of rustoleum. After cleaning, I used rustoleum red on my small block engine. It didn't take anywhere near the quart that I purchased. It has been holding up extremely well.
I used their bar b cue grill paint on my headers after sandblasting. No primer. Holding up great so far.

Color selection may be a problem, but from everything I've tried POR 15 Hardnose (two part mix) is by far the best for durability. Paint it on w/a brush and it looks better than if you shot it. Not easy to work with or cheap, but it works. I have tons of pics, just ask....

This glass bumper was painted with rustoleum ($8.00 for a quart) and a cheap spray gun. Took over 3 weeks to dry to the touch. I got impatient and put 'em on while they still made my fingers silver. Took over a month to dry completely/ I do like the look though.

This intake was painted with POR hardnose($50.00 a quart) with a throwaway brush, so NO cleanup, and dried overnight. I've used this stuff on alot if things over the last 5 years and it all still looks like the day I did it.Dosen't seem to be affected by ANYTHING, just stays looking good. Total PITA to work with but the results are great...

Should have mentioned...The Rustoleum will scratch very easily while the POR is bulletproof. Thing that sucks is color selection.

has anyone used this stuff?

Yes, a couple of people above did say they used it. I believe a friend of mine used it on his engine, but it was sprayed. Looked real nice and seemed real durable.

Outcast Dodge guy.

A quart goes a long way, would probably do three complete motors. Here's a pic of my motor/trans I did 5 years ago. It's covered with crap from sitting in the garage for the last year, all I did was wipe some of it off with a dry rag.
