Friend of mine is going to be dropping off his 727, so I can find a problem.....so what do you think I should look for?

9 or 10" PTC "street" converter behind 383 that runs high 12's in 65 coronet street car. Cheetah Rev Man valve body.

About 3 years ago, I put new clutches and bands in this trans and it has been running fine for years. Now it's having an issue.

Taking a long time to "move", and a long time to get into gears when shifting, street driving or WOT. It's like the pump isn't pumping enough fluid or the converter is toast.

On jack stands, it takes a MINUTE to get the wheels to turn when first putting it into gear. From there, it's very sluggish getting into gears.

He has taken it out and dropped the pan....no broken parts in the pan, and fluid looks relatively ok, and the filter doesn't seem plugged up or anything.

What's your guess,....I'm thinking it's the converter or the pump.

I did one like this a few years back.It ended up being a broken seal ring on the reaction shaft,if I remember correctly.

Do a reseal, replace pump, might as well relace clutch packs while your at it.The problem may be just sealing rings or pump, but don't take a chance.

I would not tear into one without taking it apart back to the overrunning clutch.I would hate to put it back in and still have problems.

I would think performing an air test would tell you if you had a seal problem. In my opinion the only way the convertor would cause a slow engagement would be if it was draining down which would be a vb issue.

It would have been nice to have swapped the valve body with a known good one before pulling the trans out of the car. Hopefully you will find a broken ring or damaged seal. Check the surfaces the rings ride on and the groove as well.

I agree an air test is a good idea before tearing it apart. Just like measuring input shaft end play, basic checks first.

Does it have firm reverse? If not it's likely the forward clutch. If it's soft in all gears, I'd be looking in the pump area (either sealing rings or loose pump, broken pump, etc...)

back in the early 90s i tore a trany apart twice looking for a problem, i finally tried a different valve body and that fixed the problem. the symptoms were different though.
