I have a 1968 440 out of a Chrysler 300 I put in my 72 Roadrunner. What is the correct timimg? I have it set around 8 to 10 degrees BTDC I don't have any books that old. Set it to mid 70s timing. Thanks

Not sure what the book says, but you can try 12* initial 36* (2400rpm) total and go form there. Make sure your vac advance is unhooked while you time it. Also grab a vacuum gauge and tune your carb while you are at it.
Good luck.

I think they're set at 0 deg TDC for a stock engine, I think all the big blocks are.

My 67 "Glenns" shows for 67 if no CAP (cleaner air package) (all) 440's timing is 12.5 BTDC. With CAP TDC if a stick and 5BTDC if auto. 68's may be (& very probably are) different. I'm assuming a stock 440 & 10 BTDC is a good ballpark initial & if doesn't ping your fine.

Set your total timing to 34-36 and let the idle timing fall where it may.

This is the best way, for a quick set up.

Then no risk of too much timing etc.

Depending on the rest of the combo, you might want to make some changes to dist springs, slots etc..

Depends, some distributors have so much initial timing built into them if you do this you end up with 0* initial and some combos won't even want to fire up with that little spark.
