Bill Originals were cold galvanized, the repop I saw a couple of years ago were hot galvanized.
Amazing how an unchallenged lie can become the absolute truth.

Is Dale's Cuda Shop still around? I called last August several times and never got an answer or recording. While in Canton-Akron area which is just minutes away from Alliance ,Ohio where Dale's is (or was) I looked them up in the phone book and found nothing.

Call this number: (330) 823-2776
If you don't get someone, don't worry... just try them a few times. It's his son and he is able to sell you Dale's Cuda Shop stuff.... I just got some AAR stripes from him.

Original muffler heat shields were of course electro-galvanized. Thin and extremely hard. Components such as the auto trans dust shields and license plate holders are done the same way. As far as I know, there are no LEGAL (RE: EPA issues) avenues to RE-DO electro-galvanizing. To do it properly, you would need to strip it anyway, if that is even possible. Electro-galvanized FINISHED PRODUCTS (such as some types of buckets etc.) today are made from material, typically sheets, that have ALREADY gone through the treatment process, and then are sheared/cut/stamped/whatever to arrive at the finished product it was destined to be. There are all sorts of specs for the treatment, and this determines the protection level as well as the appearance. Aesthetically, this is seen as what I call the "large-leaf" or "small-leaf" pattern. Typically, what is seen on the items specific to Mopars has the "large-leaf" pattern, but it can vary.
I have a set of shields I brought in from Year One 3-4 years ago for a customer (I could never get Dale on the phone). They are NOT galvanized. Whether that has changed, I do not know.
NOS shields are typically "large-leaf" galvanized with red oxide over the top (what the motive for the added primer is, I have no idea).
Hot-Dip is done just as the name implies. Generally softer, thicker and sloppy, and used more for severe environments. I have a local company that does it (what a horrible place: I would not even go all of the way into the building), and this was used on the unique parking brake cable connector for 71-72 E/B-Body that I reproduce.

Here is a set of NOS heat shields that I have. With the quality of the primer application at it's usual standard, we can have a peek at the galvinized finish under it...
It appears to be "small leaf" in this case, but that probably depended on the vendor for a particular run of parts.
