This is for building my W5 headed 340 race motor. I think I found some 340 blocks in pretty good shape but they are missing all the main caps. Does anyone here have at least the rear and front main caps for a 340 that they want to get rid of or sell to me? Thanks!

I would consider getting the aftermarket caps while you are machining the block. The 318 are similar, but a little smaller on the center caps. I think the pump cap might be the same, but I haven't measured them.

318 ones are the same but you will have to check line bore and hone.
Buy these 318/340 ones on the lower left 5.2/5.6 in French

I built a 318 about 25 years ago and put a 340 windage tray and used the DC bolt kit. The tray hit the crank and I had to use two flat washers under the head of the 2/4 capscrews. I measured those caps later when I replaced it with a 340 and found the cap to be about 1/8" shorter at the bolt surface. I haven't had any 318 engines since, nor measured any caps. Based on one 318 block and one 340 block, that's what I found.

As MR340 mentioned the factory 340 caps do have a little more beef to them; the rear cap I have never measured but looks identical to the 318 cap.Bearing in mind that any 340 caps are likely to be 40 years old any only offer a tiny margin of additional support I would go straight to the aftermarket and obtain a superior product in every way.( I wish I had ditched my 340 caps when I set my 340 up;live and learn)

Thanks for the link Dodgem / dodgeboy8. :-)

For the middle 3 I am definitely going with 4 bolt angle caps. I found someone that had a full set of all 5 caps so I bought them from him.

if that's a factory block, i wouldn't recommend doing that. all your doing is creating another stress riser from where the bolt holes break through and from the cut threads you'll be putting in there.
