Just wondering if anybody here can advise where to locate the model number on one of these units? I am looking at a used one, and want to make sure it fits my application, a 1970 Duster with an 8.75 diff and 340 with a 4-speed.

There's no factory locker for any 8.75 or even Dana. Mother Mopar stayed with limited slip. Lockers buck going around corners. There are plenty of aftermarket companies out there making locker spools for that app.

Thanks for the reply, dougsmopars. I am aware that Ma Mopar never installed a locker from the factory. I am trying to make sure that this particular part is applicable to my car. I don't want to blow the cash and end up with a useless part, if you understand where I'm coming from.

That was my hope as well, DirectSubjection. However, I have had no luck so far in locating any number that even resembles such a part number. I get the impression that this isn't a soft-lock unit, but one of the older lockers. I have already visited Eaton's website, but didn't locate anything there, either.

If it's an old locker, it probably is a old circle track piece. Then you'd have to assumed it's been raced on. So who knows what condition it's in. I think they are tough to inspect without taking them apart. You can change the springs in them to effect harshness to some relative degree.

Well, before I decide to disassemble this, is there anything I need to know, such as anything that may be under pressure from springs, etc.? Any exploded views, repair articles, that I can access?

Thanks for the posts so far. So Dr. Diff, is it still a locker? And as for the circle track question, it had a ring gear attached that was a 2.76 ratio, at least according to the numbers on the side of the ring gear. It also had the part number of 2070684 atamped on it. I tried to do a search, but came up with nothing. I am assuming by the part number that it is a Mopar part number. Not knowing much about circle track racing (ok, knowing absolutely nothing!!!), I wouldn't think that a 2.76 would be a good gearing for any racing application. If I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me!

OK, I guess I stand corrected. Not knowing anything about circle track racing, I guess maybe it was used for that purpose. The ring gear itself was like new, no chips or unusual wear. I just was hoping to hear from someone that it really is a locker. The fellow that sold it to me advised that he had already had it opened and that it was in excellent shape. He said he bought it for a project car (as I just did), and unfortunately never did install it. I just wanted to be sure that I got what I paid for, a true Detroit Locker.

Did those run lockers?? I would think they would have all run spools?? (I'm not a drag guy)

Per my 1974 Petty Enterprises Catalog....

2.76:1 Ratio part number 2070690 (that is the part number you order. Many time the casting number or stamped number on parts are a different number but close). I would assume a 2.76 is a high banked speedway gear.

FWIW...The picture in the PE Catalog of the Detroit Locker looks just like the one posted above.

Thanks autoxcuda! I have been trying to locate some resemblance of a part number on the unit itself, but nothing so far. I have found both cast and stamped numbers, all of which have been 5 digit numbers. Not too many places on this thing that a number could be hidden! At least I can rest assured that I purchased a Detroit Locker, now on to find out if it's in operable shape!

I'm with you on the spool thing. Going in a straight line would be better done with a spool, I would think! I am a drag racing fan, but never been up close with a top fuel or funny car to observe the drivetrain. Kinda wish I could, though.

I know your Detroit Locker is an early one because it has the '68 and earlier style carrier bearings.

All the modern 8 3/4" lockers use the '69 and newer bearings.

Well, sir, I appreciate your input very much. Can you advise what the difference is between the earlier carrier bearings and the newer ones? Can the newer ones be used on the older lockers?

You must use the same part number that came off the unit. The carrier bearings are specific to the Locker, not to the third-member casting.

OK, thanks. But, since the bearings are obviously still on the unit (I don't currently own a puller), can you possibly advise what part number and make of bearing that you would recommend?
