Got the 500 fired today for the first time. Oil pressure at idle runs 30 to 35 fluctuates constant, hot. At 5500 it goes to 80 drops immediately to 65 steady. Running indy max single line cover, melling HV pump. .003 on mains, .0025 on rods. .050 restrictors to rockers. Solid roller. Joe Gibbs break in oil. Fram HP1 filter.Have not tried to swap out guage yet. Ran out of time. I guess my question is does your oil pressure fluctuate at idle? Thanks, Galen

no my pressure is steady. i have about the same set up as you, i have the milodon set up. cant remember now what the pressure was with break in oil but it was lower. maybe check out your relief valve, and cut your oil filter open and check it out. it shouldnt drop pressure at 5500rpm.

Does it lope much at idle? At idle with performance bearing clearance, pressure changes directly with RPM since the pressure relief valve should be closed. You may be seeing the effect of RPM changes in oil pressure.

My only concern is the spike to 80 psi (hot) when revved. A running pressure of 65 hot sounds typical but the spike to 80 may indicate a sticking pressure relief valve on the pump. I guess that could cause erratic idle pressure. I can't think of any diagnostic other than removing and checking or changing the oil pump.

The last time I saw one fluxuate(SP?) was cause by a roller lifter exposing the oil galley If it is the roller lifter exposing the oil galley it should fluxuate all the tim, not just when it is hot. I found it by remving the distributor and priming the motor and slowly rotating the motor over until the lifters that where doing that open up far enough to lose pressure, you can hear the oil gushing out with the valve covers off If that is the cause Let us know what you find, we ended up blocking off the left side(drivers side) oil galley(behind the flex plate or flywheel) with a small press in plug like that is end the rocvker arm shafts, it took two as the first one [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] open after a while. the second one never failed

I THINK YOU might be sucking air, check all your fittings and hoses, something sounds like it might be loose.

Thanks guys, I cut the oil filter open it is clean. Before I put another filter on what spin on do you guys prefer. Going to dump out the break in oil and check all of my pickup fittings. I am going to pick up a good manual guage. The guage in the car is an autometer electric with 3 wire transducer.
