how much et did you gain when you switched to a low gear set in a 904 transmission? just want to know if it`s really worth the effort to put a set in.

I kind of have an answer for you. I went from a low geared 904 to a 727 and it lost a tenth in the 60 and two or three in the 1/4. This was with the same converter as I just had it switched to a 727 setup. It lost that much ET on the motor and on the nitrous. Bigger nitrous pills got the ET back but the 60 never came back.

The more torque and the less weight your car has, the less a low gear set will help. There are too many variables to give an accurate answer.

What rear gear do you have in it Brad?

I tried a low set in my Dakota and the Duster and it was a waste of time. Switched them both back the very next week.

Your situation might be different though if your not running alot of gear and street driving it some.

It depends of course If your not spinning the tires now and it stays hook up with the additional starting line gear ratio it may pick up as little as .04 and as much as .18 Every combination is different so unless you know someone who has the exact same combination as yours and has made the switch so they can say with authority and personal expereince what there results are, you shouldn't and can't really compare someone elses results that isn't like your car BTW, every car that I have ran them in 727s went faster

I picked up .04 in 60ft and .03et in the 1/8mi and the car stands up high every pass, footbraking. I wouldn't have my trans built without a low gear set.

part of it is all that extra weight slinging around in there on the 727

Thats why I listed that info . I think the .1 in the 60 was all gear ratio IMO.

It was to long ago to remember what it did when I swapped from a standard 904 to a low gear 904 lol.

I picked up a tenth in the 1/4 mile 727 stock gears to 727 low gear set no other changes.
the 904 is supposed to be 1 to 1 1/2 tenths by itself?

It all depends on your combo. One of the side effects of the shorter low gear is that you spend more time in second gear getting down the track. Just my .

The low gear set changes 1st and 2nd gear ratios.
stock: 2.45/1.45 low gear planetary: 2.74/1.54
It just changes 1st gear alot more.

I bought mine years ago the lower first and second is noticable. first time I installed it made a bunch of other changes. Drove it street strip for yearsI ended up braking the welds on it when the rear brakes locked on. anyway had it welded and was running 3600 lb gtx 440 11.5 to 1 indy SR heads home ported ultra dyne 263/271 @ .050 with .597/.620 lift 4000 stall would run 11.0's to 10.7's one year i had trans out for freshen I put the gear set back in no other changes as only the tranny came out. then it would run 10.9's to 10.6's.
pretty much always a tenth faster than the year before of what I had come to expect and of course PB was .1 faster
I now have 4.56 gears so first is like going to 5.10 second like 4.88 and drive course is the same 4.56. you are not in second longer as it is lower geared too. fair drop into third though.

When i built the transmission i only had the four pinion aluminion plantary gear sets. i have a low gear set in steel cases. i do drive it on the street. it has 4.10`s. did the factory make stock gear sets in steel cases? it has a 1.62 60ft with a 4500 ati converter 12.06 @109mph. Brad
