I recently broke in my first solid lifter camshaft (Comp Cams .520 244/252) and using Crane 1.5 Gold rockers. All set up by engine builder.

I hear a lot of "clacking" going on in the engine. I broke in the cam with the proper oil/additives and all went well. Changed the oil after break in with Valvoline Racing 20/50 racing oil.

The engine seems fine, has plenty of power, just is a little noisy. Is this to be expected with solid lifter cams?

Thanks.

solid lifter cams and their valvetrains are noisy by nature. if in doubt about anything, check the valve lash to be sure all is okay internally.

Does it get quieter when it warms up? Did you reset the lash when it warmed up? What is the valve lash set at now? I ans well as many other racers and engine builders will tighten the lash up some to see if the motor will make more power as well as that will make them quieter, sometimes depending on the cam design and rockers used My street motor with a Comp Cams solid roller cam and harland Sharp rocker arms do not calack set at .024 intake and .024 exhaust hot

When I picked up the engine the builder told me the lash was set at .018 This would be cold. I have not checked it hot.

I would say it gets louder when it warms up..?

I do not have the cam card, but I believe it suggests .016-.018 lash.

It is time to check it now before it has a chance to get worse, do you know how to set the lash and the proper procedure to do it? If not say so and we will help you do that, it is necessary to check the lash hot because that is the way the motor runs 95% of the time
