I have a '68 440 that I have built for my '69 charger. I have the opportunity to purchase a '78 Dodge truck with a 400 and a big block 727 tranny with it that I was hoping would work with my 440. I am wondering if this tranny will bolt up to my engine and be the same as if I purchased a '68 727? If it is not what years of trannys should work with my engine? Any help or input is appreciated!

So what's teh big deal with te weight??? All you have to do is knock or cut it off and the the converter will work on a internal balanced engine like the 383.
Yeah you can knock it off, I've done it a few times... I've also had one the welds were so deep it leaked once the weight was removed...

I would just build it for what you need. The trans itself can be built to do anything you want. Like said above it should just bolt in. Get the tq that internally balanced (that is if you built the 440 internally balanced) and get it to match your cam and have fun.
If your not going to have the trans built for now and you know it's a good trans get a tq for your application and go have some fun. It may not last........then again it could last a long time.

Update on the tranny. The truck is a 78 Dodge 1 ton with the heavy duty running gear. I would assume that the 727 would be pretty stout since it is for a 1 ton and is bolted up to a 400. Good input so far. As per the previous post correct me if I am wrong but it looks like the tranny from a 68 charger would be the same as this tranny except for the actual year it was made and that it is externally balanced. If the truck was a 4x4 then the tranny would not work but if it was 2wd then they should be the same length?

unless the 1 ton has a short shaft with a bolt on yoke it will still fit, just need to build a drive shaft with a splined slip yoke on it I did that in a 68 Dart and SB short shaft bolt on yoke 727 from a club cab truck my MH short BB 727 is diff mount location but with some fabing its in the 85 truck now,and I am building the dive shaft with a slip yoke in it

Also be aware that some trucks had a 2-piece driveshaft with a short tailhousing with a fixed yoke, not easily adapted to a passenger car.

I am picking up the truck tonight and will take some pics of the tranny and post them soon so you guys can see it. I think it will work but wanted your opinion to make sure it is compatible with my engine before I get it rebuilt.
