I couldn't see the name of the track anywhere. I wonder if it was the track where Richard Petty went into the stands and killed a bunch of people. The pictures are super clear.

I almost thought that it could have been Australia or New Zealand with the amount of foreign cars until the pictures of Petty and Hubert Platt came up.

If you click in the link above, it will take you to the homepage of the site. The picture of the front mounted superchargered hemi in a dragster says the strip is Roanoke.

I checked my facts and was wrong in the above post. The track that Petty crashed at and killed a 8 year old was Southeastern @ Dallas GA. The track that the dozen people got killed at was Yellow River which is up by Covington GA. The Dixie Twister owned by Hubert's brother Huston Platt was the car that went into the stands. The car was found in Nova Scotia and restored a couple of years ago.

Try lakelandraceway.com for a little midsouth drag racing history. I spent many Sundays hanging on the fence getting my nitro fix as a kid.

The old stuff is so cool, This is a car that was
built down the road from me. I got to drive it
in street form and it was a lot of fun.
Back in the early days when it ran the hard slicks,
I'm sure it was a hand full.

That is really kind of sad if you think about it. I know it's called progress, but it makes me sad to think of all the history that is made at facilities like that over the years. Not just this place but all racing facilities that go away in the name of progress. Browse the Lakeland web site. It's pretty cool that someone takes the time to keep the memories alive

Wouldn't it be convenient to have a strip where the Rooms-To-Go wharehouse is now located on I-4.

I was there in 65 I think. It was the time where there was a transition from flag to X-mas tree. They had something like a stop light looking deal hanging at the starting line and two people down at the finish with flags. The guy in the lane of the car that finished first would raise his flag.

Great pics. Thanks for posting them. Y'know, I'd rather go back & see those cars that at BEST were running 9s(?) than see any of todays cookie-cutter racecars. The ingenuity & and work on them is FAAAR more interesting to me than the "checkbook hot-rodding" we see today.........

the track Petty had the incodent was my local track for all through the 90's
it closed on its 50th aniversary 06
it was called "Reds dragstrip" later southeastern or Dallas dragway (dallas Georgia)
the other track in covington ga..i believe (guess) was altanta speed shop track. fwiw.

The track where Platt had his wreck was Yellow River, not Atlanta Speed Shop. If you know where to look you can still see Yellow River from I-20. Its main street in a trailer park. No kidding. Altanta Speed Shop Dragstrip is now a road with homes on it.
The good old days. I was talking to an old Super Stock racer, David Tatum, at the Points Meet in Atlants this weekend remembering that we could run Super Stock Wed, Fri, Sat and Sun and never leave the Atlanta Area.
Now its 3-4 times a year in GA.

Lets see more photos of old tracks. Somewhere on the net I had a link with some old photos from Edgewater in Ohio & Bluegrass in Lexington on it.
Think it was a Redmond collection or something like that.
