I had the Demon up on a floor jack on the passenger side, and the hood was open at the time. I accidently let it down too fast, and I heard something "clank" inside the fender. Now the passenger side hood spring is floppy; i.e.- have to hold up the hood with a prop rod and the hood actually sank a bit on that side. When I looked at the spring in the fenderwell area, I noticed that on the round tension spring in there, there's a barrel shaped peg at about the 6 'oclock position, well the question mark shaped tab that is usually held up against that is now at the 12 o'clock position. My question is, am I FUBAR'd or is there a way to re-tension the spring? or does it sound like its shot. And how does it come out if I have to get it out and have it rebuilt/replaced. Does anyone/anyplace rebuild them?
Thanks in advance. This is very frustrating.

I just pulled the hood hinges off of my 68 Barracuda to change the springs. Didnt have to mess with the fender. I removed the splash shield in the fenderwell. Nothing to it

So, removal/installation is done via the splash shield? Thanks!
Now who rebuilds or repops them?

I don't think anyone sells new A-body hood springs. But they might still have them through Mopar parts. They made that spring design in A-bodies from 67-76. And maybe other cars used them. I've heard of guys with glass hoods using Omni? hood springs and they will fit right in. Are you sure the spring itself is broke? When I got my 68 Barracuda in 1993 the spring stud that is welded to the cowl broke it's welds. That holds the end of the spring. The spring assy will flop from front to rear. The hinge is fine, just doesn't have a spring to it. Been that way ever since! When you open the hood is leans to one side. Still stays up.

Well, Im not entirely sure. the spring stud is still there and intact. Like I said earlier, the "hook" end if u will of the spring instead of being locked against the spring stud at the 6 o'clock position, has now gone up to the 12 o'clock position. Not sure if the whole thing needs to be rebuilt?
Something had to break or it just popped off. Might have just skipped off the stud and you could just reinstall it.
My stud is still "there" but is loose in the cowl hole sitting limp and the spring will just slide off it now. Might be able to look through the door post and see if the stud is moving.
Is the crimp washer still on the stud that holds the spring on? If not, look for it at the bottom of the fender drain and or fish it out with a magnet.
