Did you car have a reverse dash light to the left of the ash tray (A-body)?

Only on 4 speed cars, thats so you dont put in reverse thinking its 1st and visa versa. on a 3 speed there wouldn't be that problem.

My 340 71 3 speed Duster doesn't have one but a local guy came by to visit today and his car DID have one (1971 340 3 speed Demon).

I told him it appeared that someone might have added it (it didn't work FWIW) but he insisted it was original. Definately left me scratching my head, so I took a picture of the wire, still had the part# label on it, I'm betting it was added but I suppose it's possible that it was a factory error.

My 31 Demon 340 3 speed did not have a reverse light.I put one in with a 4 speed transmission.

Scott, I'm sure the guy didn't let you disassemble his dash but I'm thinking a closer inspection of the hole punch might be a tip off as to factory error or later add on. Don't have a reference handy right this second but isn't the factory hole punched not perfectly round and has an offset for the lamp housing?

FWIW my 70 3-speed e does not have the lamp.

Unrelated but my 71 4-speed has the lamp as it should but it seems to have been punched and located in wrong spot on the dash frame. I'm going with the idea that the hole punch guys were and at lunch until I can find a better explanation.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not think the 3sp tranny's had any provision to signal the light, that is there is no place to mount the microswitch to illuminate the light however it got there?
